Paramount Sets Course for New ‘Star Trek’ Movie From Goldstein & Daley
A new Star Trek movie is moving forward at Paramount, and the studio has tapped Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to take the lead.
Deadline reports that the pair will write, produce, and direct the project, which will be made under their GoldDay banner. The film is described as a fresh entry for the franchise, not linked to any of the past films or the current shows.
People familiar with the project told Deadline that this new movie is meant to stand on its own. It won’t follow the storylines from the Chris Pine-led films, and it won’t connect to any earlier attempts at reviving the franchise.
Instead, it will introduce a new direction for the universe and may feature a cast of characters we haven’t seen before. That idea matches comments from Skydance founder David Ellison, who recently said the next film would move away from the previous big-screen storyline, Deadline reports.
Ellison explained on an earnings call that the goal is to bring something different to the brand, saying the new movie won’t be a sequel but something completely new with new actors.
Although Paramount has not revealed the plot, Deadline’s sources say the creative team is exploring ideas that break from the franchise’s past. The plan is to build a story that stands on its own and gives the filmmakers space to create something original within the Star Trek universe.
