Peacock is keeping the world of Twisted Metal alive. According to Variety, the streamer has officially renewed the post-apocalyptic action comedy for a third season.

The renewal comes only a few months after Season 2 arrived on the platform in July and pulled in strong viewership.

The new season will come with a major change behind the scenes. Michael Jonathan Smith, who helped create the show and led it as showrunner for the first two seasons, is stepping away.

David Reed will take over as showrunner and executive producer under a deal with Sony Pictures Television.

Season 2 brought back Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa, and Will Arnett. NBCUniversal says the season has already reached 993 million minutes watched, making it Peacock’s second-biggest returning scripted season. The show continues to be one of the service’s most popular originals.

The series is based on the long-running PlayStation game known for its wild car battles and over-the-top characters. Peacock’s version follows John Doe, played by Mackie, who travels across a dangerous wasteland on a delivery job that could change his future. Along the way, he faces violent groups, tricked-out cars, and unpredictable enemies.

Season 2 expanded the story and pushed John into a deadly tournament run by Calypso, played by Anthony Carrigan.

The show has been in development for several years. Work began in 2019 at Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions. Peacock picked it up for a full season in 2022, released the first season in 2023, followed by Season 2 this year. Now, with a Season 3 confirmed, the series shows no signs of slowing down.
