Pedro Pascal In Talks to Star in Todd Haynes’ Upcoming Gay Romantic Drama
Pedro Pascal is in talks to take the lead in Todd Haynes’ upcoming gay romance film De Noche, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. He would star opposite Danny Ramirez in a story about two men who leave Los Angeles for Mexico during the 1930s.
The project first made headlines last August when Joaquin Phoenix unexpectedly dropped out just five days before filming was set to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico. Ramirez has remained attached to the project.
A source previously told THR that the team was “devastated” by Phoenix’s departure. The reasons behind his exit have not been made public.
Pascal does not yet have a deal, but he has been considered for the role since late last year. Deadline was first to report on his involvement.
Pascal recently worked with Phoenix in Ari Aster’s Eddington and appeared this summer in Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He is also set to return next year in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Earlier this year, he earned another Emmy nomination for his work on HBO’s The Last of Us.
Haynes, the director of De Noche, is known for films like Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Carol, and more recently Netflix’s 2023 film May December, which starred Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and received an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. Haynes also earned an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of Far From Heaven.
The film is being produced by Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler for Killer Films. Pascal joining the cast could bring new energy to the production after last year’s last-minute setback.
De Noche promises to explore an intense romantic story, set against the backdrop of Mexico in the 1930s, while bringing together some of today’s most acclaimed actors and filmmakers.
