Pedro Pascal Says He Was “Appalled” by His Clean-Shaven Look in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’
Pedro Pascal is known for his mustache, and it turns out there’s a good reason why he rarely shaves it off. During a recent appearance with Vanessa Kirby on LADbible’s “Agree to Disagree,” the two “Fantastic Four” stars chatted about whether mustaches or beards are sexier. For Pascal, it’s clearly personal.
The actor admitted that going clean-shaven for his role as Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984 left him feeling uncomfortable with his appearance. “I grow such s**** facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off… I really look very [awful],” Pascal said. “Strongly disagree with a clean shaven me. I was so appalled by the way I look in ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’ I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary.”
He explained that if Marvel Studios had insisted on a clean-shaven look for Fantastic Four, he would have done it. But thankfully, the team worked closely with the cast to design each character’s look, and he kept the mustache. “It was a very collaborative creation for all of our looks in the movie,” he said.
Pascal will appear as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, in Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four, due out July 25. While fans of the comics are used to seeing a clean-shaven Reed, Pascal’s facial hair has sparked some pushback.
Speaking to Vanity Fair earlier, Pascal shared how the casting reaction affected him. “I’m more aware of disgruntlement around my casting than anything I’ve ever done,” he said. “He’s too old. He’s not right. He needs to shave.”
Despite the criticism, Pascal is pushing forward in the MCU. His role in Wonder Woman 1984 was a one-time appearance, and now he’s fully stepping into the Marvel universe. He’s already confirmed to return as Reed Richards in Avengers: Doomsday next year.
