Penélope Cruz Couldn’t Hold Back Tears as Her Latest Thriller ‘Bunker’ Took Venice by Storm

Penélope Cruz had a very emotional night in Venice. The actress arrived at the festival with Javier Bardem for the premiere of Bunker, Florian Zeller’s new psychological thriller, but the biggest moment came after the movie ended. The audience at the Palazzo del Cinema kept applauding for more than 15 minutes, and Cruz became visibly overwhelmed by the reaction.

According to the premiere coverage, the standing ovation lasted around 15.5 minutes, making Bunker one of the biggest crowd favorites at this year’s Venice International Film Festival so far. Cruz was seen crying during the applause and sharing an emotional moment with Bardem, her real-life husband and co-star. The two kissed as the crowd continued cheering, turning what was already a major premiere into one of the festival’s most memorable moments.

The reaction was not limited to a few minutes of polite applause. As the ovation continued, Cruz appeared to thank the audience and interacted with fans inside the theater. She reportedly mouthed “Thank you!” as the applause passed the 10-minute mark. Director Florian Zeller also made sure the cast had a chance to enjoy the moment, with the actors stepping forward one by one while the audience continued showing its support.

The response was particularly impressive because Venice has seen some very long ovations over the years. Bunker’s 15.5-minute reception came close to the 17-minute applause received by Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door in 2024. That comparison immediately puts the reaction to Zeller’s film into perspective. A long standing ovation does not guarantee awards success, of course, but it can quickly create buzz around a movie and its performances.

Bunker itself is not exactly a light story. The film centers on Miguel, an architect played by Bardem, whose marriage to Sofia, played by Cruz, begins to fall apart after he accepts an unusual job. Miguel agrees to design a survival bunker for a wealthy technology billionaire, played by Paul Dano. What seems like a professional opportunity soon becomes a serious personal problem as Sofia starts questioning the choices her husband is making and whether they still believe in the same things.

The situation becomes even more complicated when Sofia develops a connection with an American novelist, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger. The story gives Cruz and Bardem the chance to play a couple dealing with serious tension while also bringing their real-life relationship into the spotlight. Stephen Graham is also part of the cast, adding another major name to a film already packed with recognizable actors.

The Venice premiere also gave Cruz plenty of attention before the screening even began. She arrived wearing a striking red dress and spent time greeting fans, taking photos and accepting flowers. Once the movie finished, however, it was her emotional reaction to the audience that became the defining image of the night.

Bunker is also arriving at an important point in the awards season calendar. Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American distribution, and the movie is expected to receive an awards-qualifying release later this year before a wider theatrical rollout in 2027. Zeller already has a strong connection to awards season thanks to films such as The Father, so there is plenty of reason for people to watch how Bunker performs in the months ahead.

For Cruz and Bardem, the Venice premiere was clearly about more than just promoting another movie. Seeing Cruz break down in tears while standing beside her husband showed just how much the response meant to her. Whether Bunker eventually becomes a serious awards contender or not, its Venice debut has already given the film something every festival movie wants: people are talking about it.

And after a 15.5-minute ovation, it is going to be very difficult to ignore Bunker as the fall movie season gets underway.
