‘Percy Jackson’: Did Annabeth Really Kill Percy?
‘Percy Jackson’ is a popular series of fantasy novels by Rick Riordan featuring the adventures of a young demigod and his friends in a world where Greek mythology is real. One of the main characters is Annabeth Chase, the daughter of Athena and Percy’s love interest. Throughout the series, Annabeth and Percy face many dangers and enemies but also develop a strong bond and loyalty to each other. However, some fans have speculated that Annabeth might have killed Percy in one of the books, either intentionally or accidentally. Is there any truth to this theory?
Why would Annabeth want to kill Percy?
Annabeth and Percy’s journey in the Percy Jackson series was not an easy one as they went from rivals to friends to lovers in a fantastical world rooted in Greek mythology. Starting at Camp Half-Blood, they went on quests together that deepened their mutual respect and friendship. In ‘The Lightning Thief,’ they join forces to recover Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, leading to Annabeth’s affectionate kiss on Percy’s cheek.
‘The Sea of Monsters’ sees them facing Cyclops and growing closer, with Percy saving Annabeth from Sirens, which prompts an emotional hug. ‘The Titan’s Curse’ sees them dancing together, revealing Percy’s feelings, but Annabeth is kidnapped by Atlas, prompting Percy’s determined rescue. The Battle of the Labyrinth explores their romantic moments and a first kiss in Mount St. Helens, leading to a heartfelt confession of love. And, you get the gist of it, despite having tense relationship most of the time, the feelings were there. But despite Riordan throwing clues here and there that Annabeth and Percy might be a couple somewhere down the line, there are also several theories on why Annabeth would want to kill Percy.
For starters, she might have been jealous because Percy had more than friendly relationships with other girls like Rachel of Calypso, for example. Annabeth also might have been corrupted by the Mark of Athena, which drove her mad and made her seek revenge against the Romans. She could also have been manipulated by Kronos or Gaea, who would easily use her as a pawn to destroy Percy and the other demigods.
But this didn’t happen; at least Annabeth never killed Percy in the books.
There are plenty of fan-fiction works in which Annabeth kills Percy but none of them are canon
Fan fiction is a type of creative writing where fans of a certain book, movie, show, or other media create their own stories based on the original characters, settings, or plots. Some fan fiction writers like to explore alternative scenarios or outcomes that differ from the canon or the official version of the story. For example, some fans of the Percy Jackson series might wonder what would happen if Annabeth, Percy’s girlfriend and fellow demigod, killed him instead of saving him and then making out the whole stories of Annabeth going rouge or something similar, but not in the canon material, she never killed him.
In truth, Percy often comes close to dying, but he always manages to survive, thanks to his courage, skills, friends, and luck . Percy was seriously injured, poisoned, or cursed in multiple books and has come close to death at least 30 times over the course of several series, but luckily, it was never Annabeth’s purposeful plan to kill him.
