Pete Davidson Reveals Painful Turning Point That Led to His Sobriety
Looking back at 2025, Pete Davidson shared a deeply personal turning point in his life that paved the way for the stability he enjoys today. During a candid appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, the comedian reflected on the destructive cycle of his past addictions and the heavy toll they took on those closest to him.
He admitted to pushing away everyone who showed him genuine affection, often daring them to leave as a defense mechanism, until they finally began to call his bluff. The catalyst for his sobriety, however, was a heartbreaking intervention from his mother, Amy Waters Davidson.
While the Saturday Night Live alum was in treatment, his mother shared her paralyzing fear of discovering his death through a news report. Davidson recalled that this conversation shattered his resolve to continue down a dangerous path, noting that he felt he couldn’t die until she did.
He credited her unwavering support as the reason he finally decided to “get his s–t together,” acknowledging the sacrifices she made as a single parent following the loss of his father on September 11, 2001. At the time of that interview, Davidson was looking forward to a future he previously thought impossible: fatherhood.
He expressed immense gratitude for finding sobriety before welcoming his first child, noting that he would have been “so not ready” and “mentally deranged” if he were still under the influence. “Thank God that I’m sober and where I am—I wish I had more time,” he told Von, reflecting on the “year and change” of clean living he had accumulated alongside his partner, Elsie Hewitt.
Today, in the spring of this year, those goals have become a lived reality for the 32-year-old performer. Davidson and Hewitt celebrated the arrival of their daughter, Scottie Rose.
On the professional front, Davidson’s career continues to evolve beyond his sketch comedy roots. He is set to star in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios thriller How to Rob a Bank, directed by David Leitch, which is scheduled for release in September.
Additionally, he is currently touring with his new stand-up show, which features more storytelling and personal reflection on his journey through recovery and parenthood. As he prepares for the Netflix Is A Joke festival this May, Davidson appears more grounded than ever before.
