Peter Safran Has a 1-Word Answer for Fans Worried About ‘The Batman Part II’
Few superhero sequels have taken as long to reach the screen as ‘The Batman Part II’. Matt Reeves’ follow-up to his gritty take on the Dark Knight has gone through years of development, delays caused in part by the 2023 writers’ strike, and several release date changes.
When cameras finally started rolling in London in June 2026, fans were relieved. That relief didn’t last long. Earlier this month, DC Studios confirmed that production on ‘The Batman Part II’ had been temporarily paused so Reeves could focus on a family matter. The studio said Reeves has its full support and that it looks forward to resuming production.
The news was first reported around October 5, and the cast has since addressed it. While promoting his film ‘Primetime’, Robert Pattinson confirmed the production was pausing for a little while and said the team would figure things out. Sebastian Stan, who plays Harvey Dent, gave a gloomier description in an interview with IndieWire, saying the production was in a very deep winter.
With fans worried that the long-awaited sequel might stall indefinitely, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran addressed the concern directly. Asked in an interview with IGN whether there was any scenario in which ‘The Batman Part II’ doesn’t resume filming, Safran gave a firm answer: “No.”
It’s about as clear as an executive can be. Safran didn’t give a restart date or production timeline, but his answer makes it plain that DC Studios has no intention of abandoning the project.

Safran also expressed confidence in the filmmaker and in what has been shot so far. “Matt Reeves is a supremely talented filmmaker,” he told IGN, adding that “what we’ve seen so far of the shoot, it looked absolutely fantastic.”
He also pointed to DC’s plans for 2028, noting that “we know that we’ve got Batman: Part Two and Dynamic Duo in 2028.” The animated ‘Dynamic Duo’, which Reeves’ 6th & Idaho is also producing, is set for September 22, 2028.
Safran’s comments come during a period of major change. The interview focused on DC Studios’ slate after Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros., a deal that has left fans wondering how the new leadership will treat existing projects.
Safran’s firm answer suggests that ‘The Batman Part II’ remains a priority under the new ownership, for a franchise that has already had plenty of delays, which should reassure fans.

For now, ‘The Batman Part II’ is still set to open in theaters on February 18, 2028. The sequel was previously moved from an October 2026 release, and studio executives have said it’s too early to know whether the current pause will lead to another delay.
Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, alongside Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell and Jeffrey Wright, with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan among the new additions.
The pause is clearly frustrating for fans who have waited years for the next chapter of Reeves’ Gotham. Still, the reason behind it is personal, and the studio’s public support for Reeves shows it is willing to wait for its director.

Safran’s answer may not settle every question, but it settles the most important one: ‘The Batman Part II’ will go back into production. The only real unknown is when. Reeves’ first film earned strong praise for its noir atmosphere and detective-driven story, so expectations for the sequel are very high.
If Safran’s description of the footage is accurate, the wait could be worth it. Until filming resumes, fans will be watching closely for any update on when Pattinson’s Batman returns to Gotham.
Are you reassured by Peter Safran’s promise that The Batman Part II will resume production?
