Pirates of the Caribbean Producer Provides Update On The Future Of The Franchise

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most known franchises nowadays. It was the first movie franchise ever that consisted of two or more movies that grossed over $1 billion dollars and it was probably the most known Disney franchise before The House of Mouse acquired Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other franchises that are now worth billions of dollars.

Based on the Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the same name, which first opened at Disneyland in Anaheim, California in 1967, the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series started in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. Directed by Gore Verbinski, the movie was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role, for which Johnny Depp was nominated for the role of Jack Sparrow. Two sequels directed by Verbinski followed in 2006 and 2007, after which the original trilogy was concluded.

In 2011, the franchise continued with On Stranger Tides, and the latest, fifth installment — Dead Men Tell No Tales — was released in 2017. The development of the sixth movie started almost immediately after the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales, but Johnny Depp was let go in 2018 due to the allegations of abuse, which he has denied. Disney later announced that they’re also developing a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Margot Robbie. Johnny Depp recently said how he’ll never work with Disney again even if they try to rehire him

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the franchise, now revealed that there are actually two Pirates movies currently in development.

“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.” — Jerry Bruckheimer for The Times

But, will any of those movie feature Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? Bruckheimer gave a pretty coy answer.

“Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.” — Jerry Bruckheimer for The Times

Johnny Depp is currently trying to clear his name and restore his reputation at the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp is getting a lot of support from the public, but it seems for now that Disney isn’t planning to rehire him, and even if they do, it’s not likely that Depp will want to go back to play Jack Sparrow again. Of course, the situation might change, and the next Pirates movies are still years away from release, so who knows what might happen by then. One thing that we all can agree on, Pirates of the Caribbean aren’t really Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp and one of the most known characters he ever played.
