It was previously announced that Disney is planning to release a new trailer for one of its upcoming movies at the Oscars 2022 ceremony. Some fans hoped that it would be the first trailer for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, but that rumor was quickly debunked. Now, we know for sure, the trailer that previous reports referred to was the newest trailer for Lightyear, the upcoming spin-off of Pixar’s most known franchise — Toy Story.

The Toy Story franchise kicked off in 1995 with the original movie directed by John Lasseter. The movie introduced popular toys that were owned by a boy named Andy, and the most known toys were Cowboy Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, and Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen. The original movie was a huge success, and it launched a multimedia franchise, which also included three sequels, released in 1999, 2010, and 2019, respectively. All those movies were very successful, and Toy Story 3 was even nominated for Best Picture, which is something that not a lot of animated movies achieved. Both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 won the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.

Although the possibility of the fifth film wasn’t ruled out, Pixar now has something different in store for us. Buzz Lightyear, a famous toy from the main franchise was inspired by a real space ranger of the same name, and now we will see his origin story of how exactly he inspired the famous action figure from Toy Story films. While Tim Allen voiced the action figure in the main franchise, the real Buzz Lightyear will be voiced by beloved Captain America star Chris Evans.

At last night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony, a new TV spot was released. Check it out below:

Angus MacLane, who previously worked as an animator on Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 will now have his feature film directional debut with Lightyear. Chris Evans is starring in the titular role, and Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. also star.

Lightyear is set to be released in theaters on June 17, 2022.
