Pixar’s Next Superhero Saga Just Got Its Boldest Update Yet
Pixar has spent the better part of two decades building one of animation’s most beloved superhero families, and the wait for their next chapter has been a long one. Since ‘Incredibles 2’ hit theaters back in 2018, fans have wondered what direction the franchise would take with the Parr family all these years later. That patience is finally starting to pay off.
The studio used its biggest stage of the year to remind everyone why this series still matters, tying the reveal to a milestone celebration that had Pixar fans buzzing well before any new footage rolled. Disney and Pixar marked 40 years of Pixar Animation Studios with a packed showcase, and ‘Incredibles 3’ was front and center.
At Disney’s D23 event, Pixar confirmed that Incredibles 3 will round out the trilogy by shifting the spotlight to the kids. According to details shared at the panel, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack have been sneaking out at night to protect the city, though keeping the youngest under control remains easier said than done. That framing lines up with what the official Empire account described on X, which noted that supers are legal again and that Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack sit at the center of the new film.
The corporate twist teased in that post also checks out. Pixar confirmed that the Super Hero League will once again be featured in the story, and according to further reporting from the event, Incredibles 3 will follow what happens after the superheroes regain their legal status, which happened at the end of the second movie. It’s a natural next step for a franchise that has always used its superpowered premise to poke at bureaucracy, image management and family dynamics all at once.
Edna Mode isn’t going anywhere either. Edna Mode is back as well, and importantly for longtime fans worried about a jarring time jump, the three Incredibles kids will keep their current ages, meaning the timeline does not move forward. Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films, is staying on as writer this time, while Peter Sohn, known for ‘The Good Dinosaur’ and ‘Elemental,’ takes over as director.
There’s also a new threat on the horizon. Pixar gave audiences their first look at the film’s main villain, showcasing the mysterious character’s imposing silhouette, while a separate report added that Mr. Incredible will struggle to remain relevant as he comes to terms with his mortality, and the villain will reportedly help explore the idea that not all superheroes are good. That’s a heavier thematic swing than either previous entry attempted, and it suggests the trilogy closer won’t just be a victory lap for the Parr family.
‘Incredibles 3’ is currently set for a June 16, 2028 release, closing out a story that began all the way back in 2004. With the kids finally stepping into the spotlight and a corporate superhero system ready to be picked apart, this threequel has a lot riding on it.
