‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Season 5 Episode 5 Recap and What the Ending Means for Kanan and Raq

The war between Kanan Stark and his mother has stopped simmering and started boiling over. Episode 5 of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ pushed the final season into its back half with a mix of long-teased confrontations and fresh betrayals that reshape the board for everyone in South Jamaica, Queens.

This entry in the ‘Raising Kanan’ story continues to trace how a teenager becomes the ruthless figure fans already know from the original ‘Power’, and this week the show finally let two of its most volatile characters settle a score that had been building for episodes.

Kanan and Marvin Come to Blows

The centerpiece of the hour was the confrontation between Marvin and Kanan, a fight the show had been building toward for weeks. Raq instructed Marvin to send a message by targeting one of Kanan’s biker associates, and Marvin accomplished that by crashing into one of them. Raq then killed the biker herself before telling Marvin that Kanan was responsible for Lou’s death.

That revelation set the stage for a brutal reckoning. The confrontation between uncle and nephew felt like the discipline Kanan had been avoiding for a long time, and even Primo had previously believed Kanan needed someone to check him, which made the fight feel earned.

London Brown, who plays Marvin, spoke about the physicality of the sequence. Brown recently told The Knockturnal about preparing for the emotionally charged scene, while also revealing that Mekai Curtis performed all of his own stunts during the fight, which made the confrontation even more impressive.

Kanan’s reaction to the fallout said as much about his character as the fight itself. Kanan’s personality continued to evolve in unsettling ways this episode, and when Jukebox updated him about Detective Garcia’s investigation into Famous’ death, Kanan barely reacted.

Raq’s Business Network Keeps Taking Hits

Raq Thomas is discovering that her new Manhattan operation is far less stable than it looked on paper. Going into this episode, Kanan had already been working to undermine her from multiple angles, and that pressure did not let up. Raquel Thomas is determined and won’t let anything come between her and her money, but her new network is not as impenetrable as she thought, and her supposed allies are not really her allies at all, since they only work together for the same purpose of money.

The fallout from Kanan’s sabotage in the previous episode was still hanging over Raq’s operation heading into this one. Kanan had kidnapped one of Flossy’s escorts and forced her to swap the drugs she was supposed to deliver with a lethal batch, and the client who received the tainted drugs turned out to be a federal judge who died from the overdose. Flossy was furious, and Raq’s new partnership took a serious hit before it had even properly taken root.

Stefano’s role as a destabilizing force also continued this week. Stefano met directly with Kanan, where the two discussed Raq’s failed attempt to have Stefano killed, and news of that meeting quickly reached Pino, creating another layer of distrust among everyone involved. Stefano later made his intentions even clearer by ordering Breeze to disrupt Raq’s operation, setting up another inevitable confrontation.

Breeze Tightens His Grip on Kanan

Breeze’s influence over Kanan has become one of the season’s most unsettling threads, and episode 5 leaned further into it. After a supplier disrespected Breeze, he and Kanan brutally beat the man and nearly killed him before casually joking about it later at a diner.

Their conversation also revisited a piece of family history that has cast a long shadow over the season. During their exchange, they discussed the possibility that Def Con could have been Breeze’s son and Snaps’ nephew, and Breeze claimed that Raq killed Def Con and stole his business.

That claim does not sit comfortably with what the show has already established. The premiere’s 1985 flashback showed High Post introducing Raq to the drug game, making Breeze’s version of events difficult to accept, so either Breeze is manipulating Kanan with false information or the series is making a significant change to previously established continuity.

The episode also offered a bit of franchise nostalgia for longtime viewers. Viewers got a closer look inside Breeze’s apartment, a location first seen in the original ‘Power’ series.

Where the Episode Leaves Kanan and Raq

The hour closed on a note that reinforced how far Kanan has drifted from any recognizable moral center. The episode closed with another shocking act of violence as Breeze and Kanan arrived at a boxing match and assassinated Joaquin and his bodyguard, ending the hour on a brutal cliffhanger. The closing montage was underscored by James Brown’s “The Payback,” a fitting choice for an episode centered on revenge, shifting loyalties, and consequences finally catching up with several characters.

With the season now past its midpoint, the show has made clear that neither Raq nor Kanan is walking away from this conflict unscathed. Season 5 has been built around the idea that nothing will stand in the way of Kanan’s pursuit of power, since this is not the end for Kanan Stark, it is just the beginning. Showrunner Sascha Penn has said this season will answer every question regarding the story and will resolve everything involving the Thomas family.

For now, Marvin has landed a physical and emotional blow, Raq’s business is under siege from multiple directions, and Breeze appears to be steering Kanan toward a version of himself that even his own family may not recognize much longer.
