Prime Video has cast Ed Skrein as Baldur in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the hit video game “God of War.” Baldur, the son of Odin, is one of the story’s main antagonists. A press release described him as “his father’s most dangerous weapon,” a charismatic and unpredictable figure who lives by his own rules.

Baldur was cursed as a child, leaving him unable to feel pleasure or pain. “Above all else, he longs for an opponent that can truly match his prowess in battle. An opponent that can finally make him feel something,” the release said.

Skrein joins a strong cast that includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Skrein is known for roles in Jurassic World: Rebirth, Deadpool, and Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.

The series is based on the 2018 PlayStation game, which has been widely praised and sold over 23 million copies by 2022. The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a dangerous journey after the death of Atreus’ mother, exploring both their relationship and epic battles from Norse mythology.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the show, with pre-production already underway in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.

Other executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon, alongside co-executive producers Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotis, and Ben McGinnis. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

This casting of Skrein as Baldur raises expectations for a faithful and intense adaptation, staying true to the iconic video game. The series already has fans excited to see Kratos and Atreus brought to life in a live-action format.

Bringing Baldur to the screen with an actor like Ed Skrein is a smart choice. The character is complex, dangerous, and deeply tied to the story’s emotional core. A strong villain can elevate the series and make the father-son journey of Kratos and Atreus even more compelling. What do you think about Skrein as Baldur? Share your thoughts in the comments.
