Princess Kate Nearly Trips at the ‘Digger’ Premiere, and Her Reaction Is Winning Everyone Over

The Princess of Wales brought serious royal glamour to London’s Leicester Square this week, and the ‘Digger’ premiere quickly became one of her most talked-about red carpet appearances in a while. Princess Kate joined Prince William at the Odeon Luxe on Tuesday, September 22, for the Royal Film Performance and world premiere of Tom Cruise’s new film.

The 44-year-old stunned in a floor-length purple Jenny Packham gown with a long train. According to Kensington Palace, she paired it with the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Sautoir Necklace, a pearl piece with a heart-shaped amethyst and diamond pendant that Queen Alexandra gifted to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on her wedding day in 1923, along with Princess Diana’s Collingwood Pearl Drop earrings.

That flowing train, however, led to a brief moment of drama. As Kate made her way into the venue alongside Marcus Ryder, chief executive of the Film and TV Charity, and the charity’s chair, Claire Tavernier, Tavernier accidentally stepped on the back of the princess’s gown as they came off an escalator.

The tug briefly threw Kate off balance, and she turned her head as she felt the pull on the fabric. Tavernier immediately raised a hand in apology, but the princess seemed completely unbothered, bursting into laughter as she regained her footing and carried on into the premiere.

Hello! Magazine reported that Kate kept smiling throughout and even appeared to reassure Tavernier that everything was fine. Footage of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mishap has since spread widely, with outlets from People to Croatia’s Index.hr praising how gracefully she handled it.

Part of the appeal is how relatable the moment felt. Royal watchers noted that the laughter added warmth to a star-studded evening, turning what could have been an embarrassing slip into a charming reminder that even princesses deal with wardrobe hiccups.

The incident didn’t slow down her night at all. Shortly afterward, Kate and William were seen chatting with 2 young children who presented them with flowers and a programme, complete with perfect curtsies, before the couple settled in to watch the film.

The evening also marked a reunion with Cruise, who first walked the red carpet with the couple at the UK premiere of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in May 2022, also in Leicester Square. The 64-year-old star spoke warmly about the royals ahead of their arrival, telling Hello! that he has great respect for them.

Cruise was also spotted gently holding Kate’s hand as she stepped down, helping her manage the gown’s long train. The royals also mingled with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, cast members Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly, and David Beckham, who attended with his sons Romeo and Cruz.

Filmed at Pinewood Studios near London, ‘Digger’ follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he embarks on a frantic mission to prove he’s humanity’s savior before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything, according to the film’s official description. It opens in theaters on October 2.

The film arrives with plenty of pressure. Puck’s Matthew Belloni reported that ‘Digger’ has appeared on NRG tracking with a likely $20 million opening weekend, while Dark Horizons noted its official budget sits at $130 million and that first reactions have proven divisive.

Kate’s necklace choice also carried special meaning for film fans. Queen Camilla previously wore the same Amethyst Sautoir Necklace to the premiere of ‘Skyfall’ in 2012, giving the rarely seen piece its own history with royal movie nights.

Between the stunning gown, the historic jewels, and her laugh-it-off reaction, Kate managed to steal plenty of attention on a night that belonged to one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
