James Cameron recently suggested at the Saturn Awards that the fourth and fifth installments of his science-fiction saga were highly probable, despite Disney not yet providing an official confirmation. Now, Avatar producer Rae Sanchini has provided a more definitive update, telling Inverse that the production team is moving forward with the sequels.

She emphasized that the creative crew is currently operating at full capacity to bring the next chapters of Pandora to life. The team is presently focused on the logistical foundations required for such a massive undertaking.

Sanchini described the current phase as a period of intense organization, involving budgeting, scheduling, and the construction of a modernized production pipeline. She expressed the group’s commitment to the project by stating, “Right now we’re figuring out the schedule.

We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, and building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.” One significant shift for the upcoming films involves a transition toward more accessible technology.

While previous entries utilized the highly specialized Lightstorm system, the new pipeline will leverage more widely available platforms to streamline the process. This technological evolution aims to make the production more efficient as the team prepares for the next two sequels.

Sanchini remains confident in the creative direction, noting, “We have the scripts, they’re brilliant. As far as I’m concerned, we’re heading forward.” Currently, the fourth and fifth films are penciled in for 2029 and 2031, though Sanchini clarified that these dates remain tentative.

A finalized schedule is expected to be established in the near future. These updates follow the 2025 release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has grossed approximately $1.48 billion globally. While a massive figure, it reflects a downward trend compared to the $2.2 billion earned by The Way of Water, sparking discussions about the franchise’s financial trajectory.

As of April, James Cameron is balancing his commitments to Pandora with a renewed interest in the Terminator franchise. He recently confirmed that he is developing a reboot that will pivot away from traditional cyborgs to focus more on the complexities of artificial intelligence.

Additionally, Cameron is attached to Last Train from Hiroshima, a project he has expressed interest in for years, which would offer him a rare break from the alien world he has inhabited for three decades.

The 2025 sequel Fire and Ash is preparing for its physical home media release on May 19. This release will reportedly include extensive behind-the-scenes documentaries that showcase the performance-capture technology used by the cast.

Despite the logistical and financial debates surrounding the series, Cameron’s vision for the five-film arc appears to be intact. The director has often stated that the narrative for the fourth and fifth films will take the story in unexpected directions that diverge from the earlier entries.
