Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will not return for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. This update comes from Empire magazine, where executive producer Sana Amanat explained that Frank Castle will not appear in the upcoming season, even though he showed up in the first one.

Marvel isn’t done with the character, though. Instead of joining Daredevil again, the Punisher is getting his own special for Disney+.

Marvel Studios is planning a one-hour standalone project that is expected to arrive in 2026. This special is part of Marvel’s “Special Presentation” line, the same label used for Werewolf By Night and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

The special is being written by Jon Bernthal and director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Bernthal will once again play Frank Castle, and Jason R. Moore is returning as Curtis Hoyle. Roe Rancell has also joined the cast. The project was filmed in New York during the summer and wrapped after a short shoot.

Marvel Studios started planning the special during production of the first season of Born Again. Bernthal had shared ideas for a Punisher-focused story, and Marvel asked him to help shape the project. According to Brad Winderbaum, who oversees streaming and TV for Marvel Studios, the character means a lot to Bernthal and has become one of his most recognizable roles.

Bernthal said he wants the special to feel true to the darker tone of Frank Castle. He said, “I really want to earn this and I really want this to be good.” He also promised a more intense approach to the character, saying it would show a version of the Punisher that does not hold back.

The Punisher special will stream on Disney+ in 2026, around the same time Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is expected to arrive.
