Rachel Zegler, the 24-year-old actress from New Jersey, has opened up about the criticism she faced for her roles in West Side Story and Disney’s live-action Snow White. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar UK, she reflected on the challenges of handling fame at a young age and staying true to herself.

Zegler first rose to fame when she was 17, landing the role of Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story after auditioning alongside more than 30,000 other hopefuls. Despite her breakout role, she faced criticism about her heritage.

“I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for West Side Story and too much of another for Snow White,” she said. Zegler explained that some people questioned her Puerto Rican background for West Side Story, and later her Colombian ancestry for Snow White. “It was a really confusing time to be in my early twenties… but I refuse to assimilate for anybody else’s comfort.”

The backlash surrounding Snow White intensified after she voiced opinions on the original film and spoke out on social media about political issues. While some of the comments sparked controversy, Zegler has not retracted anything. “I’ve said what I feel, and that will always be a testament to my core beliefs as a human. That’s where I stand,” she stated. She acknowledged that public backlash is a lesson in intent versus impact: “You live and you learn… there are a lot of opportunities to make more meaningful change than a tweet.”

Despite the online criticism, Zegler continued to focus on her career. She recently won praise for her West End performance in Evita, showing that her talent extends beyond film. She also credits her family for supporting her early ambitions, from paying for singing lessons to helping with travel for auditions.

Reflecting on her journey, Zegler emphasized the importance of pride in her heritage and staying authentic. “I grew up proud of being Colombian – eating the food, wearing the dresses, drinking the coffee… but in the public eye at least, when you’re two things, you’re simultaneously nothing,” she said.

Zegler’s story highlights the pressures young actors face when representing diverse backgrounds in Hollywood. Her approach shows a determination to focus on her craft and remain confident in her identity despite public scrutiny.

Zegler’s honesty and refusal to compromise her identity are admirable. She demonstrates that talent and authenticity matter more than fitting someone else’s expectations. What do you think about how she handled the criticism for West Side Story and Snow White? Share your thoughts in the comments.
