Ralph Fiennes has offered his personal endorsement for Tilda Swinton to step into the role of Lord Voldemort for the upcoming Harry Potter television series. During an appearance on The Claudia Winkleman Show on Friday, April 10, the actor who famously portrayed the Dark Lord on the big screen addressed the ongoing casting speculation.

While the HBO production has already locked in several key roles, the search for the central antagonist remains a topic of intense interest as the series prepares for its December launch. Fiennes revealed that he had actually been approached about potentially returning to the wizarding world a few years ago, but the conversation didn’t progress further.

“I said, ‘Yes, I’d love to.’ But then, nothing’s happened. I think that ship has sailed,” he explained during the broadcast. When the host brought up the popular fan theory that Swinton—known for her ethereal and often gender-fluid performances in Marvel and Narnia—could take over the mantle, Fiennes was enthusiastic. He noted that the actress would be “fantastic” in the role, lending her unique gravitas to the iconic villain.

The casting of Voldemort presents a unique challenge for HBO, as the character only appears briefly in the first story, notably as a face concealed on the back of Professor Quirrell’s head.

Because the network has shifted away from an annual release schedule, the actor chosen for this cameo might not be needed for a significant, full-bodied performance until the end of the decade. HBO chief Casey Bloys recently stated that a final decision hasn’t been solidified, though they are under pressure to finalize the cast before the Christmas premiere.

While Fiennes may not be returning, the TV series is not entirely devoid of familiar faces from the original films. Warwick Davis has already been confirmed to reprise his role as Professor Flitwick, providing a sense of continuity between the two iterations of the franchise.

The first trailer for the series, released in late March, gave fans their first look at the new central trio, with Dominic McLaughlin starring as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

In addition to his recent comments on the wizarding world, Ralph Fiennes has stayed busy with a wide range of creative endeavors throughout the year. He is currently starring in the David Hare play Grace Pervades, which explores the complex life of early 19th-century artist Henry Fuseli.

Fiennes is also set to lead the upcoming thriller The Beacon, which he wrote and directed, starring alongside Indira Varma and Charles Babalola. The film, a contemporary drama centered on a summer gathering that takes a dark turn, is expected to make its festival debut later this year.

The actor is also receiving buzz for his performance in the Vatican-set thriller Conclave, which hit theaters in late 2025. Between his stage work and his continued efforts behind the camera, Fiennes remains one of the most prolific figures in British cinema.
