That number places the new season as certified fresh, but it also tells a slightly different story than the season’s earliest reviews suggested.

For context, past seasons of the show have historically scored even higher with critics. Season 1 landed a 92 percent score, while Seasons 2 and 3 each earned 98 percent, meaning Season 4’s current standing marks a noticeable dip for a series that has rarely dropped below the low 90s.

Not every critic has been fully on board this time. Warren Cantrell of The Playlist wrote that while the basic components for success are present, the season is not much fun, with writing and acting that occasionally border on embarrassing. M.N. Miller of FandomWire similarly described the fourth season as less bold, less brash and less fun, though he noted it remains as brutal as ever.

Ritchson himself has been anything but modest about the season heading into release.
