The world of entertainment is mourning the loss of Eric Dane, the beloved star known for his iconic roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, who passed away on February 19 at the age of 53.

Dane had been bravely battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, since his diagnosis in 2025. In the final weeks of his life, he participated in a groundbreaking voice restoration project with the AI company ElevenLabs, hoping to preserve his unique voice for his daughters, 16-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia.

Dane’s widow, Rebecca Gayheart Dane, shared that the process was both urgent and deeply moving for their family. “He was really excited about it, because he was losing his voice, and it was becoming more difficult for him to communicate each and every day,” she explained.

When they finally heard the synthesized version of his voice, she described it as a powerful experience that moved everyone in the room to tears. “They were like, that’s not a recording. That’s your voice. That’s you. So it was spot on,” she added regarding her daughters’ reaction.

ElevenLabs has since pledged to offer this voice restoration technology for free to others suffering from similar neurological diseases. The initiative is part of their broader commitment to provide support to those who lose their ability to speak, aiming to help one million people reconnect with their loved ones.

Gayheart Dane plans to advocate for this movement in his honor, noting that her late husband understood the profound importance of a voice in storytelling. “He really understood how meaningful having the voice was,” she said.

Eric Dane was a celebrated talent who became a household name playing Dr. Mark Sloan, famously nicknamed “McSteamy,” on the long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

He later reinvented himself with a gritty, complex performance as Cal Jacobs in the HBO hit Euphoria, a role that showcased his remarkable range. Following his ALS diagnosis, he became a dedicated advocate for the condition, lobbying for research funding and sharing his journey to raise awareness.

The actor left behind several projects that fans are eagerly awaiting. He will appear in the highly anticipated upcoming third season of Euphoria, which is scheduled to premiere on HBO on April 12.

Additionally, he filmed a thriller titled Family Secrets, currently in post-production, and made a guest appearance on the television series Brilliant Minds. Furthermore, a memoir detailing his journey with ALS, titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, is set to be published by Maria Shriver’s imprint, The Open Field.
