Regé-Jean Page Reveals the Real Reason He Walked Away From ‘Bridgerton’ After Season One
Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1 has finally made its grand debut on Netflix, inviting fans back into the opulent world of the Ton to witness the beginning of Benedict Bridgerton’s long-awaited romance.
This season, the focus shifts to the bohemian second son, played by Luke Thompson, as he embarks on a “Cinderella-esque” journey to find a mysterious woman he encounters at a masquerade ball. However, as the champagne flows and the social season ignites, one glaring absence remains: Regé-Jean Page will not be making an appearance.
The actor has not stepped back into the polished boots of Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, since his breakout performance in the show’s inaugural season. While many fans were heartbroken when he chose to depart the series just as it became a global phenomenon, the actor has remained firm in his decision. In a resurfaced interview, he clarified that his exit was a matter of professional integrity rather than a fear of being typed as a heartthrob.
When addressing his departure, Regé-Jean told Vanity Fair that the reality of his choice was much simpler than the rumors suggested. He explained that he viewed the role as a complete arc, noting that he signed up to do a job, and I did the job, and then I did some other jobs.
For him, the story of Simon and Daphne had reached its natural conclusion, and he felt that attempting to extend it just because of the show’s success would have been a mistake. He noted that the team finished the story, and he resisted the urge to change this up and make some other stuff up just to stay on the payroll.
As of this year, Regé-Jean Page has been exceptionally busy carving out a diverse filmography that spans high-octane thrillers and classic romance. He recently appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s espionage film Black Bag, starring alongside Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, which hit theaters in late 2025. Fans who miss his romantic side won’t have to wait long, as he is set to lead the upcoming rom-com You, Me & Tuscany opposite Halle Bailey.
While the “Duke” may have officially left the Ton behind, his career continues to ascend with projects that allow him to “broaden the cultural lens,” as he recently put it. Whether he is playing a stoic knight in Dungeons & Dragons or a master of disguise in upcoming thrillers.
Page remains one of the most watchable talents in Hollywood. Bridgerton continues to thrive with new leads and fresh scandals, but the foundation laid by Page in that first season remains a vital part of the show’s history.
Do you think the series is better off sticking to a new lead couple every season, or do you still find yourself wishing for a cameo from the original Duke of Hastings? Share your thoughts in the comments.
