Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Throne Comes at a Price the Next ‘House of the Dragon’ Episode Won’t Let Her Forget
‘House of the Dragon’ has spent three seasons building toward the moment its heroine finally sits where she was always meant to. The second episode of season 3 delivered the long-awaited Fall of King’s Landing, with Rhaenyra Targaryen taking back her seat on the Iron Throne. It was the culmination of years of maneuvering, grief, and war, and fans online have been dissecting every second of it since it aired.
But victory in Westeros rarely comes clean. Rhaenyra’s forces reclaimed the capital after Aegon II fled, and Otto Hightower, discovered imprisoned beneath the Red Keep, was sentenced to death and personally executed by Rhaenyra herself, an act she reportedly sobbed through even as it finally put her on the throne. Alicent then arrived to find her father’s body, sharing a tense, wordless exchange with her once closest friend.
Now the newly released teaser for episode 3 confirms the show has no intention of letting its new queen enjoy a moment of peace. The trailer makes clear that the Dance of the Dragons is far from over, since many lords still pledge allegiance to Aegon, and more bloodshed is coming, while Rhaenyra also has to govern a fractured city without a strong Small Council behind her. Reports suggest the punishment of traitors will extend beyond Otto and Jasper Wylde to other lords who backed the Greens.
The footage also drops a heavier bombshell. Daemon Targaryen identifies Daeron Targaryen as a lingering claimant to the throne and tells Rhaenyra directly, “You’re going to have to kill him.” He does not stop there either. Daemon warns her further that “you may not rule and remain yourself,” adding that a door within her must close for her to succeed as queen. Rhaenyra, ever defiant, is not ready to accept that framing. She fires back, “I dispute that I must become what I am not,” pushing against the idea that ruling requires losing herself entirely.
Alicent’s presence in the preview only adds to the tension simmering beneath the surface. She appears briefly in the trailer and ominously states that time will tell, a line that lands very differently now that Rhaenyra has killed her father. New stills also tease more scenes between the two women, suggesting Alicent may have plenty left to say to the friend turned rival who now sits above her.
Behind the camera, this episode carries extra weight for the franchise itself. Sara Hess wrote the episode and Clare Kilner directed it, making Kilner one of only four directors across the franchise to helm seven or more episodes. Episode 3 also reportedly marks the one hundredth episode across the entire World of Westeros franchise, spanning ‘Game Of Thrones’, ‘House Of The Dragon’, and ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’. The episode is set to debut July 5 at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
