Ridley Scott Just Claimed Sole Credit for Saving the ‘Alien’ Franchise From Extinction

Few franchises have had as chaotic a life cycle as ‘Alien,’ swinging between horror-genre triumphs and outright creative collapse across nearly five decades. Ridley Scott, the filmmaker who started it all back in 1979, has never been shy about which chapters he considers worthy of the name, and he’s just made that opinion clearer than ever.

That franchise nearly died more than once, and Scott stepped away from the director’s chair for years after the original film before eventually returning to clean up what he saw as a mess left behind by other filmmakers. It’s a grievance he’s aired before, but he recently put it in sharper, blunter terms than usual during a promotional stop for his new film.

Ridley Scott says he brought the ‘Alien’ franchise back to life with ‘Prometheus.’ Speaking with French outlet Brut, Scott didn’t hold back when asked about his legacy within the series. “I did the best one, by far. Full stop. End of the fucking story,” he said. He continued, “Then they let it die. After the fourth, they killed it. So I sat there thinking, ‘I’m gonna bring it back.’ So I sat down with very good writers, and we’ve caught fire, and wrote Prometheus.”

That’s a pointed jab at ‘Alien Resurrection,’ the franchise’s fourth entry starring Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder under director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. That film pulled in just $47.8 million domestically, making it the lowest-grossing entry in the series at the time and drawing sharp criticism on release, a commercial and critical low point Scott clearly still holds against the franchise’s non-Scott directors.

‘Prometheus,’ by contrast, brought together a stacked cast that included Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. The film currently holds a 73 percent critics’ score, trailing only ‘Aliens,’ the original ‘Alien,’ and 2024’s ‘Alien: Romulus’ among the franchise’s entries.

Scott’s comments arrive as he continues actively working to finish the story he started with ‘Prometheus’ and its follow-up, ‘Alien: Covenant.’ He’s previously discussed picking up directly where ‘Covenant’ left off with Fassbender’s David, who by that point believes he’s essentially become Ozymandias, and has spoken about wanting to see the “final stage of David’s story” eventually reach screens.

Scott hasn’t been entirely dismissive of other directors’ contributions to the franchise, either. He’s noted that after he set the stage with the original film, filmmakers like James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet each put their own spin on the universe, calling the variety a unique element of the ‘Alien’ series overall, even while ranking their individual results unevenly.

That mixed assessment extends to the franchise’s most recent entry as well. Scott has said ‘Alien: Romulus’ “was OK” but suggested the franchise “needs some help” going forward, reinforcing his belief that his own vision remains the series’ strongest throughline even decades after the original film’s release.

With Scott continuing to develop new ‘Alien’ material alongside his already packed slate of upcoming projects, his comments make clear he still considers himself the franchise’s rightful custodian, regardless of who else has stepped behind the camera in the years since.
