‘Rings of Power’ Season 3: Charlie Vickers Breaks Down Sauron’s Failed Attempt To Forge the One Ring

Every long-running fantasy saga eventually has to pay off the moment its entire mythology has been building toward, and few shows have been circling that moment as deliberately as Prime Video’s Middle-earth epic. Two seasons of manipulation, disguise, and betrayal have all been leading somewhere very specific.

That destination is finally coming into view. With Season 3 set to premiere on November 11, Prime Video has been steadily rolling out details confirming that Sauron’s most infamous creation is about to take center stage, and the road there is proving far messier than fans might expect.

New script pages shared by Entertainment Weekly reveal that Sauron does not succeed in creating the One Ring on his first try. According to the pages, Sauron attempts to forge the ring at his stronghold of Barad-dûr, only for the effort to go up in flames when an orc’s hand bursts into what the script describes as “unearthly flames,” ultimately consuming the orc entirely and leaving behind nothing but a pile of bones.

That fiery failure sets the tone for a season showrunners have described as a dramatic tonal shift for the series. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay confirmed that this is the season where Sauron finally makes the One Ring, calling it a turning point that changes everything about how the show feels going forward.

Charlie Vickers’s Sauron has spent the first two seasons operating under disguise, first as the mysterious Halbrand and later as the elven smith Annatar, using deception to manipulate Celebrimbor into forging the earlier Rings of Power.

With those masks now stripped away, co-showrunner J.D. Payne noted that Season 3 finally gives audiences a full-on villain in a way the series hasn’t shown before. McKay echoed that shift in tone. “This third season is darker, more dangerous,” McKay told Empire. “No one is safe.”

The actual forging sequence proved to be one of the most demanding the production has ever attempted. According to Vickers, the scene took two full weeks to film given its length and complexity, and stepping onto set in full Sauron costume left a lasting impression on the actor himself.

“The first day I walked onto that set, I cried,” Vickers told Empire, describing it as an extraordinary privilege to help bring such a pivotal piece of Middle-earth history to screen. McKay similarly praised the technical demands of the sequence, calling it among the most ambitious the show has ever attempted to pull off.

The script pages’ depiction of a failed first attempt adds an unexpected wrinkle to how the show is choosing to dramatize the One Ring’s creation, suggesting Sauron’s path to his most iconic weapon won’t be as straightforward as fans might assume from the source material. Given how carefully the series has handled Sauron’s slow transformation from schemer to open antagonist, a botched first attempt fits neatly into that larger arc of a villain still refining his methods.
