Rob Reiner, the actor and director known for classic films like “When Harry Met Sally…,” “This Is Spinal Tap,” and “A Few Good Men,” was found dead on Sunday afternoon at his home in Brentwood. He was 78. His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was also found dead. She was 68.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the deaths are being investigated as a homicide. Authorities believe both victims were stabbed. The Los Angeles Fire Department said they were called to the home around 3:30 p.m. to provide medical help.

When firefighters arrived, they found a man and a woman dead inside the house. Sources later confirmed to PEOPLE that the victims were Rob and Michele Reiner.

Reiner’s family released a statement after the news broke. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement said.

Police have not announced any arrests. However, multiple sources who say they have spoken with family members told media outlets that the couple was killed by their son, Nick Reiner. Police have not confirmed this account. LAPD officials say Nick, who is 32, is alive and currently being questioned.

Rob Reiner was the son of legendary comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner. He first became widely known as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the CBS sitcom “All in the Family.” He played the role for nine seasons and won two Emmy Awards for best supporting actor in a comedy, in 1974 and 1978.

Before moving fully into directing, Reiner worked as a writer on shows such as “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” “Happy Days,” and “All in the Family.” In 1984, he made his mark as a filmmaker with “This Is Spinal Tap,” a mockumentary about a fictional heavy metal band. The film later became a cult classic.

Over the next several years, Reiner directed a string of popular and successful movies. These included “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Misery,” and “A Few Good Men.” His work stood out because he moved easily between comedy, drama, fantasy, and thrillers.

In 1987, Reiner helped start Castle Rock Entertainment. The company produced many well-known films, including some of his own projects. Castle Rock was later sold to Turner Broadcasting in 1993.

Later in his career, Reiner continued to make films, though they were less successful at the box office. One of his better-known later projects was “The Bucket List” in 2007. Speaking to the Guardian in 2008, he explained his approach to filmmaking. “I’m making the movies I want to make,” he said. “Studios are looking for hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars in profit and you’re not going to get it with a little movie… But I came into this business to express myself and tell stories, not just churn out a product.”

Reiner was also active in politics. He was a strong supporter of Democratic causes, took part in California ballot efforts, and was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. In 2006, he considered running for governor of California but later decided not to enter the race.

The investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner is ongoing. Police say they will release more information once it becomes available.
