Rob Reiner reportedly expressed fear of his son Nick shortly before his death, according to sources.

At Conan O’Brien’s holiday party on December 13, the late director allegedly told a guest, “I’m petrified of [Nick]. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I’m afraid of my son. I think my own son can hurt me,” the Daily Mail reported.

The couple, Rob, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were tragically found stabbed to death at their Brentwood home on December 14. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that both deaths were caused by “multiple sharp force injuries” and ruled them homicides.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested later that evening and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He reportedly fled the scene after the incident and appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday. An arraignment has been scheduled for January 7, 2026. Nick, who has an older brother, Jake, and a younger sister, Romy, has a GED and did not attend college.

Reports indicate that the Reiners had a verbal argument with Nick at the holiday party the night before their deaths. A family friend told The Post that Rob had warned others about Nick’s deteriorating mental state and erratic behavior.

Guests at the event described Nick’s actions as alarming. “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,” an insider told People. Another source told Us Weekly that his behavior was “creepy.”

Nick has a long history of personal struggles, including substance abuse and repeated stays in rehabilitation. He reportedly entered treatment 18 times as a teenager for heroin and cocaine addiction.

In 2015, he co-wrote the film Being Charlie, based on his own experiences and his relationship with his father, which Rob Reiner directed. Sources say that Nick began to reconnect with his father during the making of the film. At the time of the deaths, he was living with his parents.

Rob and Michele’s memorial service was held at comedian Albert Brooks’ mansion in Los Angeles. Attendees included Billy Crystal and his wife Janice, Larry David, Bill Hader, and Conan O’Brien. Guests were reportedly emotional hearing about Rob’s final words regarding his son.

This tragic case highlights the deep struggles some families face with mental health and substance abuse. It’s a stark reminder of how serious underlying issues can escalate if left unaddressed. What are your thoughts on this heartbreaking story? Share your opinions in the comments.
