Robert de Niro Calls Out Actor and They Reveal “I Never Made That Mistake Again”
Robert De Niro remains one of the most respected figures in cinema, with a career defined by intense performances, iconic collaborations, and an undeniable command of the screen.
His reputation as a master of his craft is supported by a legacy of critically acclaimed films and numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards. Even when he ventures into lighter, more commercial fare, like the Meet the Parents franchise, his presence is consistently recognized by audiences.

The two collaborated on Martin Scorsese’s 1991 thriller Cape Fear, where De Niro played the menacing Max Cady to Lewis’s terrified character. Celebrating his 72nd birthday years ago, Lewis shared an anecdote on Instagram about a tense but transformative interaction she had with the veteran actor during that time.
“Here we are, Bob gives me a glorious compliment and instead of graciously accepting it, my 20 yrold insecure covered by pride- self says ‘Well yaknow I made up like 90 percent of what I did.
I improvised and wrote scenes,” Lewis recounted, referring to her performance in Natural Born Killers. “Bob looked at me sternly and said, ‘Oh no. No, don’t ever disrespect the writer. Don’t you ever disrespect the writer or your director. Ever.’ In that one moment, I realized so much, I felt like I grew 5 yrs. I never made that mistake again.”
This stern piece of advice highlights De Niro’s old-school approach to acting, which prioritizes mutual respect and professional hierarchy. He maintains a firm belief that if a director grants an actor creative leeway, that actor must reciprocate by honoring the vision of both the writer and the filmmaker.
Lewis’s story illustrates that for a performer of De Niro’s caliber, the collaborative process is sacred, and failing to acknowledge the roles of those behind the camera is a significant misstep.
The 82-year-old icon shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to participate in diverse and high-profile projects. Recently, he starred in the Netflix series Zero Day and the film The Alto Knights, where he took on a dual role.
Fans are also anticipating his upcoming appearance in the crime thriller The Whisper Man, an adaptation of Alex North’s bestselling novel, which will also feature Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan.
Juliette Lewis has also remained a prolific presence in the industry. She recently starred in the body-swap dramedy By Design, released earlier this year, and the action-comedy Over Your Dead Body, which is set to premiere at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival before its wide release in April.
