Robert Downey Jr. is making Marvel fans lose their minds again. This time, it’s over a simple photo he posted from the set of Avengers: Doomsday. At first, it didn’t seem like a big deal. Just a comic book cover. But it wasn’t just any comic, it was West Coast Avengers #35. And longtime fans knew it wasn’t random.

That issue came out back in 1988. It was written by Steve Englehart, with artwork by Al Milgrom. It tells a pretty wild story. Doctor Doom gets trapped in the body of a younger version of himself, Kristoff Vernard.

Then he ends up fighting Khonshu , the same moon god who gives Moon Knight his powers , and even captures some Avengers. It’s a strange but memorable comic, and the fact that Downey posted it has people wondering if it’s a big clue about what’s coming next.

On top of that, in the same post, Downey also shared that he was listening to a song called Change of Scenery, which happens to be by his son, Indio Downey. That little detail made the whole thing feel even more personal and mysterious.

Now, fans are asking the big question, is Robert Downey Jr. going to play Doctor Doom in a way that connects to this comic storyline?

He was already revealed as Doom in the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and that moment was a game-changer.

The scene takes place four years in the future. Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, is reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to her son, Franklin Richards. Then she walks out of the room. A hooded man in green walks in. He doesn’t speak. He kneels beside Franklin, holding his little hand. In his other hand is Doom’s silver mask. That’s it. No lines. No face shown. But fans knew exactly who it was.

The comic Downey posted and this scene together seem to be teasing something major not just for Doom, but for the whole future of the Avengers.

And now, talk of the West Coast Avengers is back in full force. In the comics, that team was kind of the B-team version of the original Avengers group. Still powerful, still cool, but with a different vibe. It had heroes like Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Mockingbird, and US Agent. And now people are asking: is Marvel finally setting this up in the MCU?

There’s more to this theory, too. Marvel’s Head of Streaming and Television, Brad Winderbaum, recently appeared on the Phase Hero podcast and gave fans something to think about. While talking about the upcoming Wonder Man series, he dropped a few hints that it might be connected to the West Coast Avengers storyline.

“You know it’s a two-hander between two amazing characters. There’s this odd couple of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery and you get a little bit of glimpse of that in the trailer. I don’t wanna go too much into story details, it’s very fun to see people speculating about what the plot will be,” he said.

Then he added, “That is part of the fun of it. If you’re a fan of West Coast Avengers and know a little bit about Simon Williams you’re going to be… I mean, I hope if you’re anything like me, you’re going to be very excited to see how much homage to the source material there is.”

And finally, he said, “It really is a love letter to Hollywood in a lot of ways.”

Fans have already been talking about possible links between Wonder Man, Armor Wars, and Vision. Some reports even said these shows might all be tied together and lead to the formation of a West Coast Avengers team. It hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the clues are hard to ignore now.

So between Downey’s tease, the Doom reveal, Winderbaum’s comments, all signs seem to be pointing in the same direction. The West Coast Avengers might actually be coming to the big screen. Whether that happens in Avengers: Doomsday or something after, fans are watching every move closely.
