Rock Legend Calls on Florence Pugh to Play Her in Upcoming Biopic
Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry has her sights set on Florence Pugh to play her in an upcoming biopic.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the 80-year-old singer opened up about her acting career and the film in development about her life, directed by Charlotte Wells of Aftersun fame.
Harry didn’t hide her enthusiasm for Pugh taking on the role. “If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven,” she said. “I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.”
Harry herself has a strong acting background, appearing in influential films like Videodrome, Union City, Hairspray, New York Stories, and Body Bags. Despite her acting experience, she regrets one big missed opportunity.
Ridley Scott had offered her the lead role in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, but her record label discouraged her from taking time away from music.
Daryl Hannah eventually landed the part, and Harry’s bandmate Chris Stein called it “bad advice”, telling Harry she “should have done it.”
As for Pugh, she’s already shown interest in playing Harry. At the 2020 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, a writer asked which famous figure she would like to portray in a biopic. “Blondie, just because she’s so cool,” Pugh replied, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Pugh is currently one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, with starring roles in films like Midsommar and Little Women, the latter earning her an Oscar nomination.
It seems like a Debbie Harry biopic with Florence Pugh could finally become a reality. Her enthusiasm for the project and Pugh’s own admiration suggest this could be a perfect match.
This could be an exciting combination. Florence Pugh has the talent and charisma to bring Debbie Harry to life on screen. What do you think about Pugh playing Blondie’s lead? Share your thoughts in the comments.
