‘Romy and Michele 2’ Is Finally Happening: Kudrow and Sorvino Are Back on Set and Heading to Hulu

Few comedy duos from the nineties have lingered in the cultural imagination quite like Romy and Michele. The two fashionable, Post-it-claiming best friends from ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ became unlikely icons of female friendship and unapologetic self-confidence, and the original film quietly grew into one of the most beloved cult comedies of its era. Fans have spent years wondering whether their favorite pair of obliviously charming blondes would ever get another moment in the spotlight.

That wait is officially over. The sequel is now in production, with Oscar winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow both returning to star. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the 20th Century Studios project started shooting and is currently in production in Los Angeles, with filmmaker Tim Federle at the helm. Rather than landing in theaters, the sequel will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original, available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S., and on Disney+ internationally.

The news broke alongside a playful image shared on social media showing both stars seated in director’s chairs labeled ‘Romy and Michele 2,’ dressed in outfits that appear to echo the characters’ signature maximalist style. Both Kudrow and Sorvino took to social media to share a photo of themselves on set and announced, “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”

Behind the scenes, the project has assembled much of the original team. Robin Schiff, who created the characters and penned the original film, returns to write the screenplay, while producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Barry Kemp are also back from the first installment. Costume designer Mona May, who put her stylish stamp on the beloved original after her culture-shifting work on ‘Clueless,’ is also returning to dress Romy and Michele once again.

The returning cast extends well beyond the two leads. Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, and Camryn Manheim all return from the original. Cumming, who plays Sandy Frink, had already been building fan anticipation earlier this year. The actor appeared on the Jennifer Hudson Show and told the audience, “And then, this summer, we’re going to do the sequel of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.” Joining the cast in new roles are Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham, though the specifics of their characters are being kept under wraps.

The path to production was a long one, with the project generating years of hopeful buzz before finally gaining real momentum. In a November 2024 exclusive with People, Sorvino described the sequel as “so close to being greenlit,” confirming that a director had been hired and that nearly every significant character from the original was expected to return. Sorvino had also been candid about what she hoped the sequel would preserve. In an earlier interview, she told Us Magazine that she wanted Romy and Michele “to be as relatable, but also as dumb and lovable as they ever were,” adding that their friendship and their essential spirit had to remain at the heart of the story.

Interest in a reunion had been building visibly in the years leading up to production, reaching a high point in 2022 when Kudrow and Sorvino appeared together onstage at the SAG Awards, reigniting hopes that the pair would eventually return to their beloved characters. That moment clearly meant something to fans, and now it appears the universe has finally aligned. Whether these two can top one of the most quotable comedies of the nineties is the question everyone will be debating once this one lands on Hulu, so share your thoughts below on what you are most hoping to see from Romy and Michele’s long-awaited return.
