Rose Byrne was the center of attention as she graced the red carpet for the 41st Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards in Hollywood this past Sunday. The 46-year-old Australian star looked spectacular in a form-fitting black gown featuring a dramatic midriff cutout and vibrant layers of blue, yellow, and green fabric.

She kept her look sophisticated with a sleek middle-parted updo and smoky eye makeup, joining fellow celebrities like Kaia Gerber and Kirsten Dunst for the prestigious event. The evening was a triumphant one for Byrne, who took home the award for Best Lead Performance for her role in the psychological dramedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

The film, which explores the harrowing realities of a mother on the brink of a breakdown, has transformed Byrne’s career since its release late last year. While accepting her trophy, she noted that her character, Linda, really could only exist in an independent film because of how fierce and unpolished she is.

Byrne’s portrayal of a woman struggling with a sick child and an absent husband has resonated deeply with critics, leading to her first-ever Golden Globe win in January. During that ceremony, she delighted the audience by explaining that her partner, Bobby Cannavale, couldn’t attend because he was busy buying a bearded dragon at a reptile expo.

She spoke emotionally about the project’s humble beginnings, mentioning that we shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50! In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne admitted that while she knew the script was special, she never expected the level of acclaim it has received.

She felt a massive responsibility toward the material, noting that she was so hyper aware of the challenge when director Mary Bronstein first approached her. The role required her to be “stretched” in ways she had never experienced in a feature film before, moving far beyond her famous comedic roots in movies like Bridesmaids.

Aside from her award-winning turn as Linda, Byrne has stayed busy with several high-profile projects throughout the year. She recently completed filming for the drama Tow, where she plays a homeless woman fighting against a corrupt towing company.

Additionally, fans can look forward to her starring in the upcoming Peacock series The Good Daughter, where she will appear alongside The White Lotus breakout star Meghann Fahy. Byrne is also expected to return for the second season of the hit Apple TV+ series Platonic, reuniting with Seth Rogen for more chaotic friendship-fueled comedy.

Between her busy filming schedule and her upcoming appearance at the Oscars, where she is a first-time nominee for Best Actress, she has officially entered a new tier of Hollywood stardom. Her recent honors at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and being named Hasty Pudding’s Woman of the Year only further cement her status as one of the most versatile actors working today.

While the awards season continues to keep her in the spotlight, Byrne remains grounded, often speaking about the “challenging” but rewarding nature of balancing a high-profile career with motherhood.
