Ruby Rose is calling out Sydney Sweeney after the actress’s new movie Christy failed to make an impact at the box office. The film, based on the life of boxer Christy Martin, opened to just $1.3 million after its November 7 release, according to Box Office Mojo. That makes it one of the lowest openings ever for a movie showing in over 2,000 theaters.

Despite the disappointing numbers, Sweeney seemed proud of her work. On November 10, she shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, writing, “i am so deeply proud of this movie. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”

But Ruby Rose didn’t share that pride. The Orange Is the New Black star took to Threads on the same day to express her frustration with how the project turned out. Rose said she was once in talks to star in the movie and claimed the original version was much better before changes were made.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry,” Rose wrote. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting.”

She went on to blame Sweeney for the movie’s failure, saying that she and her team mishandled a story that meant a lot to the LGBTQ+ community. “Losing roles happens all the time. For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’… None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Directed by David Michôd and written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, Christy stars Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, along with Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman. The film tells the story of Martin’s rise as America’s most famous female boxer in the 1990s and her later struggles, including the 2010 attempted murder by her husband and trainer.

While critics gave the movie mixed to positive reviews and praised Sweeney’s performance, the weak box office numbers tell a different story. Now, Ruby Rose’s comments have added more drama to an already rocky release.
