Rumors Suggest That Another Older Marvel Animated Series Might Be Getting a Sequel

Last week, ‘X-Men ’97’ debuted on Disney+ with its first two episodes, and the initial reactions have been fantastic. The show received a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as the “Best Marvel release in years.” Metacritic also gave the show a high score of 82, indicating “Universal acclaim,” a rare feat for recent Marvel Studios projects.

The series capitalized on its greatest strength: being a direct continuation of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series.’ It maintained the characters and animation style while presenting a more mature and “raw” plot compared to typical Marvel shows.

For a while now, it’s been clear that Marvel Studios is shifting its focus from live-action to animated projects. There are several animated shows in the works, either confirmed or rumored. Not all of them will be part of the MCU; some, like ‘X-Men ’97,’ belong to the Marvel Animated Multiverse. Given the success of ‘X-Men ’97,’ according to Alex Perez, the studio might consider exploring more of the ’90s animated universe. Currently, this is happening through the X-Men series, with potential for other projects, such as ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series,’ to be revived.

There have been discussions about exploring a Marvel 90s animated universe, which would most likely be explored through X-Men ’97 at this time. There is potential for more projects to be developed within this universe, the most likely candidate being a sequel series to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but this is still very early in development as an idea being tossed around.

This coincides with what Winderbaum mentioned recently, stating that they’ve transitioned to a genuine studio lately, exploring numerous ideas, although not all will come to fruition. Therefore, the idea of reviving Spider-Man’s show doesn’t seem far-fetched, especially since ‘X-Men ’97’ has been renewed for two more seasons. Season 2 is currently in production, while Season 3 is in the early stages of development.
