Although Iger emphasized the importance of quality over quantity for the MCU, Marvel Studios appears to have numerous projects in confirmed development, along with several others rumored to be in the works. Last year, speculation circulated about a Ghost Rider TV show, with some suggesting Nicholas Cage’s potential involvement. While Ghost Rider has already made an appearance in the MCU in some capacity, recent rumors indicate the possibility of a standalone movie for the character.
As per credible leaker MyTimeToShineHello on social media, Feige reportedly intends to elevate the rumored Ghost Rider TV show into a feature film. Fans are eagerly speculating on the film’s potential R rating and discussing which iteration of the character could feature. Notably, Nicholas Cage stands out as the most recognizable live-action portrayal of Ghost Rider thus far.
He made his debut as Johnny Blaze, also known as Ghost Rider, in the 2007 film “Ghost Rider,” directed and written by Mark Steven Johnson. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the movie proved to be a commercial success, grossing $228.7 million worldwide. This success led to a sequel, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” released in 2011 (worldwide in 2012). However, the sequel fared even worse with critics and did not perform as well at the box office, despite having a lower budget.
Plans for another sequel were scrapped, and the character rights reverted to Marvel Studios. Another version of Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, featured in the television series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” portrayed by Gabriel Luna.
If the rumors of a new movie are true, it must be executed flawlessly, given Ghost Rider’s status as one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, even among those not typically interested in comics.
