When you have a show that has such a long tradition as Doctor Who, it shouldn’t be a surprise that one actor appeared in multiple different roles over the years. And while this is not an overly common practice in the world of Doctor Who, it is not unheard of.

Some of these characters ended up being connected in a way, but some were not and one such mystery is going to take place in the upcoming run by Russell T Davies.

Namely, as it turns out, Varada Sethu is going to appear in the series again this season, but she won’t be playing the same chaacter she played in the previous season. Davies was asked about that and he explained the whole thing.

Fans will probably remember how Varada Sethu appeared in last season’s episode “Boom.” In it, she played Mundy Flynn, a marine fighting in a war on the planet Kastarion 3, and a character that was quite popular with the fans.

And while Sethu is coming back for the upcoming season, it turns out that she won’t be playing Flynn, but rather a completely new character. Sethu is returning to the series as Belinda Chandra, a nurse the Doctor meets and decides to take her on an adventure through time and space.

When asked about the connection, Davies said that fans shouldn’t really be bothered by that fac that much. “It plays a small role because the main story is getting Belinda home. The fact that she’s connected to someone from the Doctor’s past is handled lightly,” he said.

But that’s not all. “I wouldn’t worry about it too much but there are surprising revelations to come despite that, I’m gonna keep you on your toes don’t worry,” he added to the original comment.

He furher elaborated on the whole story. “It’s never a show I want to bog down in so much continuity that you get lost. I always think it’s inbuilt into the nature of an anthology show that every week is different,” he added. “So every week you’ve got to start again, and it becomes an unnatural weight on the show if you’re having to catch up with an awful lot of current continuity. So, if you remember the fact that actually the Doctor, as he says, has met one of Belinda’s descendants, she is an ancestor of Mundy, that’s a great extra detail.”
