Joe and Anthony Russo, best known for their work on the Avengers movies, are joining the new John Rambo prequel as executive producers through their company, AGBO. The movie, simply titled John Rambo, will tell the story of how the famous action hero became who he is.

According to Lionsgate and Millennium Media, Sisu director Jalmari Helander will direct the film, and Noah Centineo is in final talks to play the young version of Rambo. Lionsgate recently picked up the global distribution rights and will be selling the movie internationally at the American Film Market.

Charlotte Koh, executive vice president of acquisitions and co-productions at Lionsgate, said, “AGBO’s entire team, led by Anthony and Joe, are creative innovators who are delivering the most emotionally satisfying and inventive action-led storytelling in theaters around the world today.”

Production is expected to begin in Thailand in early 2026. The story takes place during the Vietnam War and will explore the experiences that shaped Rambo into the legendary soldier made famous by Sylvester Stallone in the 1980s.

Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco will produce the movie for AGBO, alongside Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, and Jonathan Yunger from Millennium Media. The screenplay was written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

Russo-Otstot shared her excitement about the project, saying, “Rambo is one of the most enduring and iconic figures in action cinema, and exploring the origins of that mythology is an incredibly exciting opportunity.”

The Russo Brothers recently released The Electric State on Netflix and are working on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars for Marvel. Their production company, AGBO, is also behind films like The Gray Man and the Extraction series.
