Ryan Coogler is bringing The X-Files back to television with a new reboot, and he recently shared some details about the project on the podcast Happy Sad Confused.

The filmmaker said the new series will follow a structure similar to the original show. “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy,” Coogler explained.

Coogler confirmed in April that The X-Files reboot would be his next project after completing the film Sinners. By Octoberr, he had already started developing the series. He also mentioned that his decision to take on the project was influenced by his mother, who loved the original show.

The original X-Files became a major hit for Fox in the 1990s. It focused on FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigating strange and unexplained events.

Mulder was a believer in the paranormal, while Scully remained skeptical, flipping traditional gender roles at the time. The series combined standalone “monster of the week” episodes with a larger story about government conspiracies, which made it both thrilling and mysterious for viewers.

Over its long run, the show introduced new characters like FBI agents John Doggett and Monica Reyes, while longtime characters such as Assistant Director Walter Skinner became more prominent. The first seasons were filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, before production moved to Los Angeles, though later seasons and the movies returned to Vancouver.

The X-Files is widely remembered as a pop culture phenomenon. It addressed themes like government secrecy and conspiracy theories, and it gained a dedicated fan base. The series earned many awards and nominations, and by the time it ended, it was the longest-running science fiction show in American television. It also spawned spin-offs, two feature films, and various merchandise.

This reboot shows that Coogler aims to respect what made the original series popular while giving it a modern touch. He is keeping the mix of creepy standalone stories and the overarching conspiracy plot that fans loved.
