Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Reboot Reportedly Finds Its Lead Star
Ryan Coogler’s version of The X-Files seems to be moving closer to reality, and it may have just found its first big star.
According to sources speaking to Nexus Point News, Danielle Deadwyler is in talks to join the project as one of the lead investigators. Her character would reportedly be paired with a male partner as they take on strange and mysterious cases.
Coogler has been developing this new take on The X-Files since 2023. He’s expected to write the pilot episode, serve as executive producer, and might even direct. The original show’s creator, Chris Carter, has met with Coogler and is said to be helping him develop the project.
The original X-Files series first aired in 1993 and ran until 2002, returning later in 2016 for two more seasons. Over its run, the show delivered 218 episodes and inspired two feature films: The X-Files in 1998 and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson starred as the now-iconic Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who investigated paranormal events and government conspiracies.
Ryan Coogler, best known for directing Black Panther and Creed, has expressed excitement about reimagining the beloved sci-fi series for a new generation. In April, he confirmed that The X-Files reboot would be his next project after completing his film Sinners.
Though Chris Carter confirmed in early 2024 that he isn’t directly involved in producing this new version, he did praise Coogler’s vision, saying he believes the franchise is in good hands. Coogler also mentioned that he met with Gillian Anderson to talk about the reboot, which hints at possible ties to the original universe.
Before this new project, Fox had tried to revive The X-Files in a different way. Back in August 2020, the network announced plans for an animated comedy spinoff called The X-Files: Albuquerque, but that series was officially scrapped in March 2023.
