Ryan Gosling Launches Into Space in Thrilling ‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer

Ryan Gosling is heading back to space, and this time it’s for Project Hail Mary, a new sci-fi movie based on the hit book by Andy Weir, the same guy who wrote The Martian. The trailer for the film just dropped, and fans are already buzzing about it. The movie is set to come out in theaters on March 20, 2026.

In the movie, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship. He has no idea who he is or why he’s there at first, but bit by bit, he starts to remember.

Turns out, he’s the only one left on a super important mission to figure out what’s making the sun slowly die. If he fails, Earth could go extinct.

The trailer opens with a confused Ryland waking up on the ship, messy and lost. Then it flashes back to moments from his past, showing how he struggled with being chosen for this mission. At one point, he even says, “I can’t even moonwalk!” The music in the background is Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times, giving the trailer a dramatic and emotional feel.

As it jumps between Earth and space, we see Ryland’s life as a teacher, his launch into space, and even a scene where he meets an alien. He later records a message saying, “So, I met an alien. He’s kinda growing on me. At least he’s not growing in me, you know, which was a concern for a little while.”

Besides Gosling, the cast includes Sandra Hüller from Anatomy of a Fall, Lionel Boyce from The Bear, Ken Leung from Lost and Rush Hour, and Milana Vayntrub, known for Other Space and This Is Us. Vayntrub plays Ryland’s late Russian crewmate, Olesya. Hüller plays Eva Stratt, the person in charge of Ryland’s mission.

The movie is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the same duo behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This is their first time directing a movie together since 22 Jump Street.

The script was written by Drew Goddard, who also adapted The Martian into a film. He’s working on this one too, and he’s also one of the executive producers. Other producers include Patricia Whitcher, Sarah Esberg, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, Ken Kao, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and even Gosling and Weir themselves.

Amazon MGM Studios

Filming started in the UK on June 3, 2024, and wrapped up in October that same year. Amazon MGM Studios is handling the release in the U.S., and Sony Pictures will take care of international distribution. The film is being released by Amazon MGM Studios through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

People got their first look at the movie through a poster that came out on a Friday, and the response online was pretty excited. A few days later, the official poster dropped, making fans even more eager. Since The Martian was such a huge hit with both audiences and critics, it has a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it makes sense that Project Hail Mary is getting a lot of attention too.

According to production info shared by outlets like Deadline and Variety, MGM picked up the rights to the book in 2020 before it was even released. The chairman at the time, Michael De Luca, reportedly paid $3 million to get it. That’s when Gosling was already being considered for the lead role. Not long after, Lord and Miller were brought on to direct, and Goddard joined as screenwriter.

There’s still a long wait before the movie hits theaters, but fans of the book and sci-fi lovers alike are already looking forward to seeing Ryland Grace’s wild, space-bound adventure come to life.
