‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: Hondo Turns the Mole Hunt Around as Malik Switches Sides
‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ has used its halfway point to resolve the question that hung over Hondo’s squad, and by the end of ‘Molotov Cocktail Attire’ Malik has been exposed as the leak and turned against his handler. That is a faster payoff than most viewers would have expected from a spinoff.
The Starz series follows Shemar Moore’s Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson, who was pushed out of the job after a botched raid and is offered a chance at redemption two years later. This recap walks through the mission, the mole storyline and what the ending means for the rest of the season.
Episode Recap and the Bolivian Summit Detail
The hour opens with Malik receiving a call from his handler, who is the mayor’s chief of staff, asking to meet before his shift. When he leaves his house, Hondo is already waiting and offers him a ride.
During the drive, Hondo says there is a mole in the unit but claims not to know who it is. He demotes Malik from the Scout role and points suspicion at Cassidy, who had reported him to the review board. Malik buys the story, and Hondo presents himself as the only person he can count on.
The squad is then assigned to provide security for a lithium trade deal with Bolivia, which is meant to be a photo opportunity for the mayor. The protests turn violent, a gunman targets Princess Selena, and Cassidy repels the attack.
The team learns that some protesters were paid to stir up the crowd as a distraction for an assassin. Hondo asks the chief of staff to call off the event, she refuses, and the squad puts on cocktail attire to blend in.
Ending Explained as Malik Turns on His Handler
Malik is placed at a remote position, which he reads as punishment, and his handler approaches him there. Hondo spots the meeting and has Ethan call a burner phone, which confirms the chief of staff is pulling Malik’s strings.
The team protects the mayor and the princess in the shootout that follows, and afterward Malik finds Hondo at the firing range and offers to leave the squad. Hondo turns that down and instead asks him to stay in the role and play both sides until they learn who is directing Miranda.
The ending shifts the central question from who betrayed the squad to who wants the unit to fail, and why. It also makes Malik a more complicated figure, since he is a mole whom his own side has now used.
Malik’s helpfulness during the shootout earns him a little more tolerance from Hondo, but his explanation for betraying the team, which traces back to issues with his father, does not erase what he did. The reprieve is conditional, and it is clearly meant to be.
How the Mole Hunt Reached This Point
The storyline has been building for weeks. In ‘Burn Zone,’ Hondo’s own secret came out, since he had falsified an after-action report to protect Sammy, who froze during an earlier operation. That revelation left him convinced the leak was inside his own squad.
The next hour had Ethan secretly keep drone footage that was supposed to be destroyed, and Hondo used the idea of decisive footage as bait. The playback showed Malik sneaking into a dark office to steal a memory drive for mayoral chief of staff Miranda Seitzmeier, and Hondo chose to stay silent.
Ready Steady Cut describes the show as an efficient procedural in its cases of the week, and says the more notable feature is how quickly the serialized plot is being consumed. The mole reveal arriving at the midpoint supports that reading.
The season runs through November 27, with new installments arriving on Fridays on Starz, and the series has already been renewed for a second season. That leaves the back half free to focus on the conspiracy rather than the identity of the traitor.
Sam and Jude Relationship Development
Away from the mole hunt, Sam catches Jude with a hookup who believes he is a kindergarten teacher named Dave. The moment could have played as a throwaway joke about his love life.
Ready Steady Cut reads it instead as an outgrowth of trauma from his undercover work. Jude has played roles for so long that he has partly forgotten who he is, and with Sam he can be himself.
The glamorous setting gives the cast room for lighter beats, including Sam comparing Jude’s tuxedo to something out of James Bond. Sam also has to pose as a waiter because her chosen dress was too tight to conceal a gun.
Hondo has now identified who is coming after him and the squad but still does not know why, and Show Snob wonders whether the chief of staff is acting on the mayor’s behalf. With Malik working as Hondo’s inside man against Miranda, do you believe he can be trusted to play both sides, or is a mole who has already betrayed the squad once too great a risk to keep that close?
