Sadie Sink Says She “Really Likes” Her Mystery ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Character, and Fans Are Reading Between Every Line
Few casting announcements in recent MCU history have landed with quite the gravitational pull of Sadie Sink’s entry into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The actress was first confirmed to be part of the film’s cast by Deadline back in March 2025, with her role described only as a “significant” character. Since that moment, the speculation machine has barely paused for breath, with fans across social media cycling through every conceivable Marvel identity she could be inhabiting when the film swings into theaters.
Sink’s path to joining the franchise was itself an unlikely story. She revealed she first encountered online fan theories predicting she would appear in the new ‘Spider-Man’ film before she was ever actually approached about the role. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, she told the audience that before she got the offer, speculation online was already pointing to her involvement, prompting her to think, “I am?” before being asked to do it two days later. That serendipitous origin story only adds another layer of intrigue to an already fascinating casting mystery.
Now, with pre-sales officially live and the release drawing close, Sink is speaking publicly about the role, though every word is being carefully measured. Speaking to Fandango, Sink said of joining the franchise, “It was so exciting. I grew up watching these movies. So, to join, it was very surreal,” before adding with a laugh, “I really like the character and that’s all I’ll say.” In a different interview, she admitted the secrecy involved has been genuinely intense. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sink said that keeping ‘Stranger Things’ secrets had become comparatively easy, because she had so many ‘Spider-Man’ secrets sitting on top of them that felt “even more secretive.” Given that ‘Stranger Things’ guarded its final season with an almost legendary level of secrecy, that comparison is not a small one.
The effort Marvel and Sony have put into keeping Sink’s identity hidden has been considerable. She was kept in a heavy puffer jacket on set so photographers could not work out her costume, and her name was scrubbed from trailers and promotional material. According to her casting list description, she plays a character described as a “sharp and free-spirited woman with a mysterious past, who is strong-willed, intelligent, and not easily intimidated.” That description, deliberately vague as it is, has done little to slow the theorizing.
The loudest and most persistent theory is that Sink is playing Jean Grey, the iconic X-Men telepath, with the film’s second trailer appearing to show her character communicating through telepathy and apparently shapeshifting, powers consistent with how the character has been portrayed in comics. Insider Daniel Richtman has gone on record stating he can confirm she is playing Jean Grey with total certainty, and with the film’s release set for July 31, the theory has reached near-consensus territory among scooper circles. ‘Brand New Day’ is also positioned as the final MCU release before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives later in the year, making it an ideal staging ground for introducing a character of Jean Grey’s magnitude ahead of the mutant era.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton is bringing a formidable supporting cast along for the ride, with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, and Michael Mando returning as Scorpion all confirmed alongside Sink. Whatever her character turns out to be, Sink has made clear she is genuinely proud of what awaits audiences, and that particular brand of quiet confidence from an actor with her track record tends to mean something.
If you think you’ve already cracked the code on who Sadie Sink is playing in ‘Brand New Day’, now is the time to make your case before the movie proves everyone right or wrong.
