Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ Trilogy Is Returning to Theaters With 4K Extended Cut of ‘Spider-Man 2’
Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy is swinging back into theaters this fall. Fathom Entertainment and Sony Pictures are teaming up to bring the beloved films back to the big screen for a special event. Fans will get the chance to relive Tobey Maguire’s take on the web-slinger, starting September 26.
This re-release is a little different from past ones. It includes the extended cut of “Spider-Man 2,” known as “Spider-Man 2.1,” which has never been shown in theaters before. This version adds more scenes and runs longer than the original.
The screenings start with the first “Spider-Man” movie on September 26, followed by “Spider-Man 2.1” on September 27, and then “Spider-Man 3” on September 28. If you miss those dates, don’t worry, the trilogy will be shown again the next weekend on October 3, 4, and 5. Tickets go on sale July 25.
Ray Nutt, the CEO of Fathom Entertainment, talked about why this release matters. “The success of ‘Spider-Man’ in 2002 helped launch the modern era of superhero films. To this day, Tobey Maguire’s take on Spider-Man resonates across generations. At Fathom Entertainment, we celebrate fandom and I am delighted that ‘Spider-Man 2.1’ in 4K will make its theatrical debut, a true gift for longtime fans and a thrilling discovery for new ones.”
This release is part of Fathom’s Fan Favorites series, where they bring back well-loved movies for limited runs. Earlier this year, they showed “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and plan to show more films like “The Sound of Music,” “Rocky IV,” and “Clueless.”
This isn’t the first time the Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” movies have returned to theaters. In April 2024, Cinemark theaters held special showings of all the live-action Spider-Man films, including Andrew Garfield’s and Tom Holland’s versions. But this time around, it’s all about Raimi’s original trilogy, and the upgraded version of “Spider-Man 2” is a big part of what makes it special.
