Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Her Biggest Career Regret
Sandra Bullock’s rise to the top of the Hollywood food chain began in the late 1980s, but it was the mid-90s that truly cemented her as a marquee attraction. Following high-energy turns in Demolition Man and the legendary action-thriller Speed, she quickly transitioned into leading roles in The Net and the star-studded legal drama A Time to Kill.
However, it was the dawn of the new millennium that brought one of her most culturally enduring hits, Miss Congeniality. The 2000 comedy featured Bullock as an unrefined FBI agent infiltrating a beauty pageant, a role that saw her share the screen with icons like Michael Caine and William Shatner.
Despite the film’s massive box office success and its status as a fan favorite, Bullock recently admitted that her memories of making the movie are somewhat hazy. Because she had not yet started her own family at the time, she viewed her professional life as her primary support system.
Work was my family. I was a working actor, New York City worker. You take anything that comes your way, and you just make the best of it, she shared in a 2021 interview with Netflix. She also noted that the project marked a significant personal milestone as her first major producing role.
Bullock felt a deep connection to the character of Gracie Hart, seeing it as a way to represent girls who didn’t fit the typical cinematic mold. It just felt right to make that film. For those girls that didn’t have the ingénue in them, like I didn’t have the ingénue in me when I was looking at films, she explained.
Surprisingly, the actress revealed that her own daughter is now obsessed with the movie, which has led to some unintended consequences at home. The stuff that she repeats, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. I need to apologize to so many parents ’cause now I’m getting it back,’ she joked about her daughter’s tendency to mimic the film’s tomboyish antics.
While she jokingly offers an apology for the influence of Miss Congeniality, there is another film in her catalog that she views with much more genuine regret. She has long been a vocal critic of her 1997 sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control, a movie she believes fundamentally failed to capture the magic of the original.
Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island, she famously remarked when discussing the maritime disaster. Even though she remains embarrassed by that particular sequel, her overall career trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary.
As we move into 2026, Bullock is experiencing a major career resurgence with several high-profile projects on the horizon. The most anticipated of these is Practical Magic 2, which is officially set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
The sequel will see her reunite with Nicole Kidman as the magical Owens sisters, with original stars Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also returning as the beloved aunts. The new film is being directed by Susanne Bier and features a fresh supporting cast including Joey King, Lee Pace, and Maisie Williams.
In addition to her return to the world of magic, rumors have been swirling about a potential third installment in the Speed franchise. While nothing is confirmed, both Bullock and Keanu Reeves have expressed a playful openness to the idea, provided the script avoids the pitfalls of the previous “slow boat” disaster.
Bullock has also been spending more time behind the camera, focusing on her production company, Fortis Films. After taking a brief hiatus to focus on her family.
