Sarah Michelle Gellar (48) Explains Her Secret to a Smooth Marriage With Freddie Prinze Jr. (50)
Sarah Michelle Gellar offered a candid glimpse into the logistics of her enduring marriage to Freddie Prinze Jr., identifying a specific household boundary as a key to their continued success.
The actress, known globally for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, explained in an interview with People that maintaining separate bathrooms has prevented decades of unnecessary conflict.
After twenty-three years of marriage, Gellar believes that sharing a sleeping space is vital, but sharing a sink is where the trouble begins. She noted that having one bedroom and two bathrooms is the secret to avoiding a lot of petty fighting that often plagues long-term couples.
The 48-year-old star was quick to point out that this does not require a sprawling mansion or an overly extravagant lifestyle to achieve. “You don’t have to be so fancy that there’s two bathrooms in your bedroom! There just has to be another bathroom available,” she clarified during the discussion.
Since their wedding in 2002, the couple has made a conscious effort to keep their domestic world away from the prying eyes of the tabloid press. Gellar expressed gratitude for the quiet and private life they have cultivated together over the last two decades.
She believes that this intentional distance from the Hollywood spotlight has allowed their relationship to thrive while raising their children, 16-year-old Charlotte and 13-year-old Rocky. “We’re allowed to live in that. And our fans have been so respectful of that,” the actress remarked regarding their privacy.
Gellar also touched upon the duality of her public and private personas, noting that she views her professional and personal identities as entirely separate entities. “I always say I’m two people: I’m Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I’m Sarah Prinze. They’re different people,” she explained.
These insights into her stable home life come at a time of professional disappointment following the recent cancellation of the highly anticipated reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. Despite having already filmed a pilot episode, the project was shelved, leaving fans of the original series devastated.
Gellar has been open about the creative friction that occurred behind the scenes, suggesting that certain decision-makers did not appreciate the source material. She told Page Six Radio that a specific executive on the show was “not a fan of the original” series.
The actress is currently hoping that the unreleased footage from the pilot does not find its way onto the internet. “Because then everyone’s going to have an opinion on this and that. And pilots are not finished. It wasn’t done,” she stated.
In a separate interview, she lamented the fact that modern society has become extremely disposable, often choosing to throw things away rather than repair them. “I think everything takes work in you, whether it’s a friendship, a work relationship or a marriage. You have to put the work in,” she insisted.
Freddie Prinze Jr. has echoed these sentiments in his own public appearances, confirming that their longevity is the result of active effort rather than luck. “We work at it,” he simply stated during a conversation with Variety last summer.
Beyond this, Gellar recently returned to the supernatural genre in the series Wolf Pack and remains active in her entrepreneurial ventures with her baking brand, Foodstirs. Prinze Jr. is currently hosting a popular wrestling-themed podcast and recently starred in the holiday film Christmas with You.
