Sarah Michelle Gellar has spoken out after the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was suddenly canceled by Hulu, and she says the decision caught everyone off guard.

In an interview with People, Gellar explained that she found out the show was not moving forward at a very unexpected moment. The call came just as she was about to appear at the SXSW Film & TV Festival for the premiere of her new movie. She said, “Let me tell you, nobody saw this coming.” She added that even key people involved with the project were surprised by the timing.

The reboot, which had the working title “New Sunnydale,” was set to introduce a new slayer while still honoring the original series. It was being developed with filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who was also closely involved in the project.

Gellar pointed to internal issues as a major reason behind the cancellation. She revealed that one executive connected to the project was not supportive of the original show. According to her, “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him.” She said this made things difficult from the very beginning, especially since the original series has a strong fan base.

Zhao also reacted to the news while speaking to Variety and CNN. She said she was not shocked by the outcome but still valued the experience of working on the project. “We, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show,” she said, adding that staying true to the story and its fans was always the main goal.

Gellar admitted she feels disappointed about how everything was handled. She said the timing of the decision made it harder, especially during an important moment in her career. Still, she made it clear that the legacy of the show remains strong. “But ‘Buffy’ is timeless… that legacy is still there — for them.”

It’s frustrating to see a project like this end before it even begins, especially when it has strong creative talent behind it. At the same time, it shows how much influence one decision can have behind the scenes. What do you think about the reboot being canceled? Do you think it should have been given a chance?
