Scarlet Witch And Jean Grey May Finally Collide In The MCU, And Here’s Who Has The Edge
Marvel fans have spent years imagining what happens when the franchise’s two most formidable female powerhouses finally share a scene. With mutants creeping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Wanda Maximoff’s fate still hanging in limbo, the hypothetical matchup between Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey feels less like idle fan fiction and more like a question the studio may eventually have to answer.
Neither character has appeared opposite the other on screen, and the MCU has yet to even formally introduce its version of Jean Grey. Still, enough is known about where each woman stands right now, and enough exists in the comics that inspired them, to make an informed prediction about who would come out on top.
Scarlet Witch’s Uncertain MCU Future After Multiverse of Madness
Wanda Maximoff has not appeared in the MCU since 2022, when ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ ended with her seemingly crushed under Mount Wundagore after destroying every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse. She has not appeared in the MCU since that film, at the end of which she appeared to die after bringing the mountain down on herself.
Marvel has done little to clarify what happened next. A Marvel-published timeline book, titled Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe, An Official Timeline, appears to confirm that the character actually died in that film. A separate comic tie-in series further muddied the waters. In the third issue of Marvel’s TVA comic series, Scarlet Witch turned up unexpectedly inside a glass containment pod, suggesting she might still be alive somewhere in the Time Variance Authority’s custody. That theory did not hold up for long. The arrival of the villain Nightmare at the TVA later confirmed that the MCU’s Wanda did, in fact, perish in Multiverse of Madness, even though the frozen figure Gwen Stacy encountered was a different variant entirely.
Adding to the uncertainty, Elizabeth Olsen’s name was absent from the sprawling cast reveal for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Marvel unveiled the Doomsday cast without her, leaving Scarlet Witch fans disappointed once again. Studio head Kevin Feige has said only that he is eager to figure out when and how the character can return.
Marvel does appear to be building toward Wanda’s world in other ways. Polaris, described as the half sister Wanda never shared a screen with, is set to join the animated series ‘X-Men ’97’ as a main cast member in 2026, giving the Maximoff family a fresh foothold in Marvel storytelling even without Wanda herself.
Jean Grey’s Long-Awaited MCU Arrival
While Wanda’s status stalls, Jean Grey’s path into the MCU has actually started moving. Sadie Sink has been confirmed to play Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, with the true beginning of the mutant saga expected to unfold after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. The ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ film is generally considered the first X-Men movie actually set inside the MCU, following years of hints such as Ms. Marvel carrying the X-gene.
The older, Fox-era version of the character has a more complicated story. Famke Janssen originated the role of Jean Grey across the original ‘X-Men’ film series alongside stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman. Several of those actors are returning for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn are all set to appear, but Janssen’s name was notably missing from the announcement. One report from an industry insider claims the X-Men team audiences meet in the film will already be operating without Jean Grey, who is dead by the time the story begins. Not everyone believes that is the final word. Veteran X-Men writer Chris Claremont has since claimed on a podcast that Janssen will in fact return as Jean Grey in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, despite the actress’s earlier denials.
Sink’s version of the character appears to be the one Marvel is building around going forward. One rumor roundup reports that Jean Grey, played by Sink, will serve as a point of view character and co lead alongside Scott Summers in the planned X-Men reboot. That reboot is reportedly skewing young across the board, with the focus on Cyclops and Jean Grey as co leaders pointing toward a character driven take rather than an action first team up movie.
Comparing Scarlet Witch And Jean Grey’s Powers
On screen, Wanda has already demonstrated reality altering chaos magic capable of leveling mountains and rewriting minds, while Jean Grey has yet to display anything close to that scale in live action. Jean Grey never showed off natural reality warping abilities in the Fox ‘X-Men’ universe, and it was only her bond with the cosmic Phoenix Force that pushed her powers beyond ordinary limits.

The comics offer a clearer blueprint for how this fight could go. Jean Grey is an Omega Level mutant whose telekinetic and telepathic abilities in some respects surpass even Professor Xavier’s own. On her own, without the Phoenix, most comic breakdowns give Wanda the advantage. Without the Phoenix Force, Scarlet Witch would easily overpower Jean Grey even though Jean remains an Omega Level mutant in her own right.
Everything changes once the Phoenix enters the equation. The Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful entities in Marvel lore, and Jean Grey happens to be its favored host, becoming one of the most powerful beings in the universe when the two are joined. Even so, the outcome is not automatic. Both the Phoenix and Scarlet Witch are capable of rewriting reality on a foundational level, and the events of ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ suggested the Phoenix Force is actually vulnerable to chaos magic. Wanda has repeatedly taken on and defeated members of the Phoenix Five in that storyline, including Namor and Magik, and even used illusions of herself to disorient her enemies.
Who Would Win If Scarlet Witch And Jean Grey Ever Clashed
Control, not raw output, tends to decide these fights in the comics. Scarlet Witch has consistently been portrayed as having little command over her own capabilities, and the mind happens to be exactly the arena where she is weakest against a telepath like Jean. Jean’s psychic gifts give her a way to win without ever trading a direct blow. Jean does not need to overpower Wanda physically because her telepathy can turn Wanda’s own instability against her.
That calculus flips the moment Jean becomes the Dark Phoenix. As a conduit for the Phoenix Force, Jean’s power output becomes nearly limitless, and even if Scarlet Witch somehow destroyed the entity, it would eventually be reborn, leaving Wanda to exhaust herself while Jean’s power source never truly runs out.
For now this remains a comics driven thought experiment rather than a confirmed MCU storyline, since Wanda’s screen future is unresolved and Jean Grey has only just been cast. Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey have not shared the screen yet, but both are considered among Marvel’s most powerful heroes, and the studio has clear paths to eventually put them in the same story. If Kevin Feige ever does find a way to bring Wanda back while Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey grows into her own powers, Marvel would be sitting on one of the biggest showdowns it has never actually filmed, and fans are already choosing sides in the comments over which one walks away standing.
