Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about why she and husband Colin Jost kept the name of their son Cosmo private. The couple, who welcomed their son in 2021, chose not to share the name with the public to avoid judgment and unwanted reactions.

“I didn’t want any of the weird face,” Johansson told Jenna Bush Hager on Today. “You know when you tell somebody and they go like this, ‘Oh, that’s different.’ What’s happening there? I don’t like it.” She explained that while pregnant, she didn’t want to deal with negative opinions and preferred to keep the name between her and her family.

Her mother, Melanie Sloan, loved the name, which was a relief for Johansson. “My mom loved it, which was like, ‘phew.’ She was like, ‘Oh my third grade crush was named Cosmo.’ It had a great meaning for her,” she shared. Colin Jost’s mother was less enthusiastic initially. “A few days after she goes, ‘Cosimo is a name I can find,’ I was like, ‘We’re not just gonna insert an I, this is what it is,’” Johansson recalled.

Johansson and Jost, who married in 2020, also share playful insights into parenting. On a previous appearance on Jenna & Friends, the couple joked over who tells better bedtime stories. Colin said he lets “the literature shine,” while Johansson insisted the kids prefer her touch.

This isn’t Johansson’s first experience with parenthood. She also has an 11-year-old daughter, Rose, with ex Romain Dauriac. Johansson has been open about her personal life, including her past relationships with actors like Ryan Reynolds and Josh Hartnett, reflecting on lessons learned and her approach to love and family.

Johansson’s decision to keep her son’s name private highlights the pressure celebrities face when sharing personal details. Protecting their child from outside judgment seems to be a priority for the actress and her husband.
