Scarlett Johansson has defended her support of director Woody Allen, a stance that has caused controversy in Hollywood. Many in the film industry have distanced themselves from Allen because of s**** abuse allegations made by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow.

The claims, first made in 1992 and raised again during the #MeToo movement, have been denied by Allen and were investigated and dismissed by New York authorities.

Johansson, who has worked with Allen on three films, Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, is one of the few actors to openly defend him. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”

In a new interview with The Daily Telegraph, Johansson addressed the potential backlash for supporting Allen. She said it was “hard to know” if her stance had affected her career or personal life. “You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in,” she explained.

She also shared her view on timing and public discussion: “At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured.”

Defending Allen has been controversial because many see the allegations against him as serious and part of a wider discussion about accountability in Hollywood. Publicly supporting him puts actors at odds with the #MeToo movement and can affect their reputation and relationships in the industry.

Johansson’s comments show she stands by her personal beliefs, even if they clash with public opinion. What do you think about her support for Woody Allen? Share your thoughts in the comments.
