‘Scream’ Star Melissa Barrera Speaks Out After Supporting Macklemore’s Stand on Palestine

Hollywood and the music industry have always had a complicated relationship with political speech. Careers can shift in days, and the reaction from peers often decides whether an artist is left to stand alone. That tension is at the center of a fresh conversation this week.

Melissa Barrera knows the feeling. She was fired from the ‘Scream’ franchise in 2023 over social media posts criticizing Israel amid the war in Gaza. Her exit became one of the most talked-about casting controversies of the past few years.

Now Barrera is speaking out about a very different situation, and her comments are getting attention. She showed support for Macklemore and questioned why she didn’t receive the same when she stood up for Palestine. The actress said it made her emotional to watch Finneas, the band, and the opening acts pull out of Ed Sheeran’s tour in support of him.

The controversy began at Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour. Macklemore said “Free Palestine” during his Sep. 4 opening set at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He was removed from the tour on Sep 14.

The fallout was swift. Finneas and Aaron Rowe were among the opening acts who withdrew, each citing support for Macklemore, and Lukas Graham also confirmed he would not appear on the tour. The departures reportedly left Sheeran’s tour without any supporting acts, and Sheeran changed the start time of his Philadelphia show on Sep 19.

Barrera told the Associated Press that she didn’t get that kind of backing when it happened to her. In her telling, it was too soon, and people were too scared, but she said that almost three years later, at least things have changed. It is a striking comparison from someone who lived through the other side of the story.

She also had a pointed question for Sheeran. Barrera said she can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he had called the bluff. In her view, he might still have had shows canceled, but she believes he could have rebooked them in other venues just as easily, and people would have rallied behind him.

Her broader argument is about the power of collective action. Barrera said that when someone is attacked, and others stand behind them, people in power become less likely to try to censor it, because eventually it won’t work. She said she wishes the people with power understood the power they have.

The ‘Scream’ franchise has continued without her. Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon both dropped out of ‘Scream 7,’ released earlier this year, while co-star Matthew Lillard only recently said he feels ashamed for starring in the 2026 installment. Barrera’s former castmates were largely quiet at the time of her firing, which makes the contrast with the tour walkouts all the sharper.

Sheeran has not been the only one drawing scrutiny, and the debate around the tour is far from settled. Supporters see the artist walkouts as a sign that attitudes have shifted, while others may view the situation very differently. What is clear is that Barrera’s comments have added a personal, industry-insider perspective to a story that shows no sign of fading.
