Sebastian Stan Reveals His Dream MCU Prequels and the Characters He’d Love to Bring Back

Thunderbolts* is one of several MCU movies coming out next year, and fans have a lot to look forward to. The film will bring a brand-new team of misfits to the MCU, similar to DC’s Suicide Squad.

It will also introduce one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, Sentry. Plus, several anti-heroes and former villains from past MCU films will return, including fan-favorite Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier.

Sebastian Stan recently appeared at Comic-Con Liverpool, where he discussed a range of topics, including which MCU prequels he’d like to make and which character he’d love to bring back to the MCU.

During a fan Q&A, Stan was asked which prequels he would choose to film if he could go back and add to the MCU’s story. He shared two ideas: one focused on Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes’ friendship before Captain America: The First Avenger, and another diving into the Winter Soldier’s backstory, specifically his time training Black Widow.

Um, I mean we could probably do with a prequel before ‘Captain America: The First Avenger, so we could really like learn, maybe more about their friendship. Their relationship, you know. I don’t know.

Or we can even do a prequel to before ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ where we’re actually seeing what happened you know, with him. We never really explore that. We always see him towards the very end of his Winter Soldier Arc. But when he had this other double life you know, where I don’t know, he taught like Black Widow how to be Black Widow.

I mean it might be interesting to see, again if you guys are interested, we’ll see.

The next question was about the Thunderbolts* trailer. In one scene, Bucky is shown pulling his vibranium arm out of a dishwasher. Stan went on to explain how this moment came about:

I’m pretty sure he [Bucky] looked at the dishwasher one day and thought, “why not? Makes a lot of sense.” I thought it was kind of funny when I first saw that in the script. But it is a quick way of doing it at the end of the day. Just throw it in there with a couple of leftover dishes and stuff, so I think it was his idea.

One of the more interesting questions was about which characters Stan would like to see return to the MCU. He joked that no one ever truly disappears in the MCU but admitted he’d love to bring back Steve and Natasha.

Do I want Steve back? Steve Rogers should come back. I think that would be fun. Who else? Natasha, obviously, there’s about 27 films with Natasha that haven’t been done yet that I keep pushing for but yeah. There you go.

It’s easy to see why Stan would want characters connected to his story to return. But since Sam Wilson is now Captain America and Yelena Belova is the new Black Widow, their return might only make sense in prequels.
